Sun-kyun’s wife Jeon Hye-jin found a note of what appeared to be his last words and she immediately reported it to the police. The actor was found unconscious in his car during the police search, the paramedics declared his passing.

Lee Sun-kyun’s death appears to be suicide as per the reports from several South Korean outlets. The actor was found dead with charcoal briquettes in a car on Wednesday morning near a park located in Jongno-gu in Seoul. 

Sun-kyun’s wife actor Jeon Hye-jin reported to the police about her husbands missing after she discovered a note that appeared to be Sun-kyun’s suicide note as the actor was under investigation over illegal substance abuse. His name came under investigation following a recent drug bust by the police. South Korea has strict drug laws which according to Reuters punishable by “at least six months in prison or up to 14 years for repeat offenders and dealers.”

In the investigation, the actor had reportedly denied the accusation when questioned by the authority since October. At the time of death, the actor was 48. He left his wife and two children.

With Oscar-winner Bong Joon-ho’s acclaimed 2019 title Parasite, Sun-kyun received global fame. Before Parasite, the actor also appeared in several movies and television shows. His prominent South Korean movie titles include Kim Seong-Hun-directed action thriller A Hard Day, Lee Won-suk’s romantic comedy Killing Romance, and Byun Sung-hyun’s thriller Kingmaker are few among his acclaimed titles. 

Sun-kyun also excelled on the television front, he had several acclaimed television titles that decorated his resume and established his prowess as an actor. He had remarkable appearances in My Mister, Diary of a Prosecutor, and Miss Korea. The actor also had the title role in the first Korean-language original series on Apple TV Plus, Dr. Brain which came out in 2021 with a six-episode run in the first season. Sun-kyun last appeared in Jason Yu’s 2023 black comedy horror mystery thriller Sleep.
