Christoph Waltz has been known around the world for portraying the iconic roles of Hans Landa and Dr. King Schultz in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained respectively.
Winning Oscars for his role as Best Actor in a Supporting Role for both the roles, Waltz revealed the secret to success. Talking about why he became an actor and how he struggled with the odds, Waltz gave a realistic portrayal of a career breakthrough.
Christoph Waltz Became An Actor Out of Necessity
In a recent interview, Christoph Waltz became the talk of the town when his answers (much like his characters) were out of the ordinary. Being interviewed by The Talks, Waltz had a lot to say about his personal life and why he became an actor in the first place.
Rejecting the idea that an actor can be successful if they are passionate, Christoph Waltz shockingly revealed that he is not passionate about acting at all. As the interview progressed the Django Unchained actor stated that he became an actor out of monetary necessities and not because he was passionate about arts or anything!
“It has nothing to do with passion” but instead out of desperation and necessity. What keeps you going is stubbornness, economic necessity, or simply endurance. Passion will, at most, lead to frustration but not to perseverance. For that, you don’t need passion; you need persistence.”
As the interview further progressed, Christoph Waltz talked about the notion that he doesn’t see anyone as good or bad. Stating that he simply portrays characters and not villains, Waltz’s answer was quite surprising to hear.
Christoph Waltz Doesn’t Believe In Villains
Portraying some of the best characters ever created, Waltz is the recipient of two Oscars for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Portraying the villainous role of Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds, the actor was loved as a villain but according to Waltz, there are no villains for him.
“That’s not something I think about. Whether someone is a villain or not, that’s up to the audience to decide, not me. Sometimes it is very interesting to speak to actors who perceived their role completely differently, who can’t understand why anyone would see them as ‘evil.'”
Having portrayed several characters and worked alongside Quentin Tarantino, Christoph Waltz is currently attached to 5 upcoming projects. There are even rumors that Tarantino might hire Waltz in his alleged final film The Movie Critic but it hasn’t been confirmed yet.
