The Superbad actor embraces his signature awkward charm, embodying a representation of men who don’t conform to traditional macho ideals. Cera, known for his reserved nature off-screen as well, finds the movie industry to be a challenging field due to the simultaneous fame and scrutiny it brings.

Michael Cera Almost Considered Quitting After Terrifying Fan Incident
Michael Cera carved a niche as the quintessential awkward teen in films, rising to prominence through roles in Superbad and Juno. However, the Lemon actor swiftly learned that upsides often come with downsides. While his newfound fame introduced him to wonderful people, he struggled to deal with the bad energies. The Sausage Party voice actor recounted a particularly harrowing experience during Superbad‘s opening weekend when he visited a bar with friends:
“You know, if people are drunk, and they recognize you, and they’re very enthusiastic, but it can be kind of toxic too. When you’re a kid, people also feel they can kind of grab you – they’re not that respectful of you or your physical space. I didn’t know how to respectfully establish my own boundaries.”
Cera confessed that he was disheartened by the intensity of the attention and even contemplated leaving the industry. The Person to Person actor turned down a hosting opportunity on SNL to evade further attention. However, his commitment to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World made him reconsider. It’s unfortunate that the world almost missed out on a talented actor due to a few misguided fans.
Michael Cera’s Barbie Co-Star Margot Robbie Also Faced Paparazzi Troubles
Earlier, Margot Robbie also admitted to having faced similar issues to Michael Cera after attaining Hollywood stardom with her role in The Wolf of Wall Street. The Suicide Squad actress revealed her fears about body image issues after the release of Martin Scorsese’s film in 2013. Her apprehensions came true when tabloids began scrutinizing her looks and body. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the Babylon actress shared:
“Something was happening in those early stages and it was all pretty awful. I know how to go through airports, and now I know who’s trying to f–k me over in what ways. If my mom dies in a car accident because you wanted a photo of me going in the grocery shop, or you knock my nephew off a bike–for what? For a photo? It’s dangerous but still weirdly nothing feels like it changes.”
