The New Persona 5 Tactica Trailer Shows Us Unique Character Abilities and Worlds

Meet the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a bunch of stylish individuals with unique abilities that bring out the best in different situations. From the trailer, we get a look at Ann, Makoto, Ryuji, Yusuke, and Futaba. Players may be familiar with some characters, like Ryuji, who uses ‘shock’ attacks through Captain Kidd, his unique Persona.

On the other hand, we have Makoto and Johanna (her Persona), who take advantage of short-range attacks. Johanna uses her motorcycle to drive into enemies, with abilities like ‘Full Throttle.

The character spotlight trailer also gives us a sneak peek into the strange world of Persona 5 Tactica, which looks and feels a little different compared to earlier titles. Compared to the turn-based battle systems we’re familiar with, the new game uses a bird’s-eye view of a map that is divided into grids, bringing a more traditional ‘tactical RPG’ experience to the mix.

Considering how common it is to see modern games blend multiple genres into their systems, Persona fans are optimistic about Tactica mixing things up eloquently.

Even with its less-gloomy environments and map design, Persona 5 Tactica’s environment is highly interactive compared to previous games. Players can use the ‘cover system’ (as seen in games like XCOM), which can be used as a defence mechanic in the midst of battle. There are interactions within the map’s intricate design that can be used to the player’s advantage as well as against enemies.

If you’ve played the previous games, then get ready to meet some familiar faces in Persona 5 Tactica. The game stars Joker, among other Phantom Thieves. According to the game’s official website:

After a strange incident, the Phantom Thieves wander into a bizarre realm where its citizens are living under tyrannical oppression. Surrounded by a military group named Legionnaires, they find themselves in grave danger until a mysterious revolutionary named Erina rescues them and offers an enticing deal in exchange for their help. What truth lies behind Erina and the deal she offers to the Phantom Thieves?

Joker and the rest have been teleported into a new, unusual dimension that somewhat resembles Revolutionary France. The ‘Legionnaires’, a new evil that lurks in this world, are ruled by a monarch who goes by the name of Marie. Except for Joker and Morgana, everyone is almost instantly brainwashed. These two are saved by Erina, who gives the players knowledge about this metaverse called The Kingdoms.

Consequently, players are tasked with uncovering the mysteries of this realm as Joker, saving their friends in the process. This ends up being a deal with Erina and her Rebel Crops. There are a bunch of new characters like Toshiro (a Japanese politician) who, like us, have arrived in the Kingdom without much knowledge beforehand.

The new trailer gives us greater insight into Metaverse’s kingdom, which shows another realm we enter after defeating Marie. This is based on 19th-century Japan, ruled by someone called Yoshiki. In order to blend into this world, the Phantom Thieves will disguise themselves as Ninja, Samurai, and Geisha.

Persona 5 Tactica’s new take on mixing up genres is certainly exciting. What are your thoughts on the new characters and realms shown? Let us know in the comments.
