Phantom Liberty, the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, is days away from release. And on the run-up to launch, we have been treated to several details about what to expect.
With the expansion set to launch on 26 September, many fans are delighted and see the game as finally being at the standard that it should have been at upon launch. It’s taken a disastrous launch and 3 years of many bug fixes, but CD Projekt Red looks to have the game they finally envisioned.
What’s the latest with Phantom Liberty?
As Cyberpunk fans will already have seen, Idris Elba is appearing in Phantom Liberty as Solomon Reed. And the man himself wasn’t content with only having his likeness in the game, he’s got several of his tracks included in the game’s official soundtrack.
The character of Solomon Reed is an agent for the NUSA Federal Intelligence Agency, so you know Elba is going to bring his take to the covert character. It could be a good start for a future role as the next James Bond, who knows?
And Reed answers to none other than President Rosalind Myers, who many Cyberpunk fans will remember had brief appearances in the core game. But now Myers has a more prominent role in the upcoming expansion and fans will no doubt pick up on how ruthless she is.
Cyberpunk fans are in for another treat ahead of the Phantom Liberty expansion launch, as update 2.0 is due to launch today (21 September). Developers have stated that 2.0 will be a complete overhaul of the base game.
It brings updates to the skill-tree system, perks, combat and most notably, an updated Police AI system which promises to bring a more realistic challenge to Night City. And let’s not forget the car combat system which looks to be another great addition to the game.

In a rather surprising twist, Phantom Liberty has paid homage to one of the greatest game franchises of all time, Final Fantasy, with a subtle easter egg. In an email chain, we can see mention of Biggs and Wedge, and no it’s not the characters from Star Wars.
It’s the recurring characters who are well-known throughout many of the Final Fantasy games. And from the email chain, we can see the two characters discussing the Expo being cancelled which looks to relate to a mission called ‘Spider and the Fly’.
In the email chain, there are several mentions of the characters as they discuss the closing of the Militech Expo you’ll encounter in the early parts of Phantom Liberty. Contained on one of the PCs in the lobby, you’ll be able to read the discussions between the pair as try to figure out why the Expo was cancelled, what the reasoning behind it is, and if they’re out of a job. Both a great nod to the characters but also a simple and effective way of establishing the new lore Phantom Liberty provides.
Whilst there is no apparent link between Cyberpunk 2077 and the Final Fantasy series, it’s a cool nod to an amazing franchise. And one that hopefully fans will pick up on.
