At the heart of every gamer, no matter their age, is Mario, who also happens to be the mascot of the Japanese gaming company Nintendo. In 2015, to spice up the fun, the company released Super Mario Maker for Wii U. But everything has its time. Since 2020, the company has been taking its components down, and April 2024 will be the last for the act as it will be discontinued completely.
The users don’t want any discontent from their creations, so they took up the challenge to clear every level there is in the game creation system. They even have a website to keep track of things, and it appears that alongside Super Mario Maker, it too has served its purpose as it is this close to the ‘100%‘ status.
Nintendo Did Add Colors to Mario’s Game Creation System
A website called ‘Is Super Mario Maker Beaten Yet?‘, which is obviously a question in itself, says “NOT YET” at the time of writing. As far as the stats are concerned, players have managed to beat 99.5% of the game. Most of the uncleared levels are from New Super Mario Bros. U, while in the context of nations, a better part of them belong to Japan. Specifically, 223 levels remain to be conquered at press time.
Users on Reddit have been engaged in the debate as the system’s time nears, with one called desantoos sharing a few big levels that may even put the finest players on their heels. Some believe players have downloaded the levels before it shuts down.
Before Nintendo disabled the feature for the creation of new levels in 2021, there were already millions of them. Available data shows that by May 2016, there were seven million courses that had been played over 600 million times.
The Gaming Market Isn’t That Vulnerable at All
With the release of its successor, Super Mario Maker 2, in July 2019, the game was met with positive reviews similar to the original. By December 2022, it had shipped over eight million copies to enter the list of the company’s bestsellers. Since its launch, social media platform X (formerly Twitter) posts associated with the original game have plummeted.
Currently, the gaming industry is in a rock and a hard place, with some major names in the sector, including Sony and Xbox, lessening their headcounts for sustainability. The move by Nintendo just adds to the concerns corresponding to the market. However, a recent report by gaming market data aggregator Newzoo indicates that the sector is poised to grow this year.
For now, it’s a race against time for players, as it remains to be seen if they can beat Super Mario Maker as it prepares to depart forever.
