PlayStation Plus has been going through changes that are upsetting subscribers worldwide. With a price hike and the addition of games that aren’t exciting enough for most, the service has recently tried to make up for this.
PlayStation users can now log into Sony’s popular gaming subscription and claim a freebie that is likely to cheer them up. At least, that’s what seems to be the case here. This isn’t a new game as such, but a premium currency that will be added to your account without any extra charges.
Free PlayStation Stars Can Be Added to Your Account Right Now
Sony recently reframed pricing for its popular subscription that allows PlayStation users to enjoy classic and new titles every month. However, the increase in pricing wasn’t taken lightly, as the games that have been added as of late don’t feel up to the mark.
In order to compensate for this, PlayStation Plus now offers 50 PlayStation Stars if you happen to play any of the games added earlier to the catalog. This includes Sable, PowerWash Simulator, and LEGO 2K Drive. In case you’re not aware of how Stars work, in the words of Sony:
Redeem these points for PlayStation Network wallet funds to use on your next digital purchase on PlayStation Store.
Users otherwise usually claim Stars by playing certain games or making in-store purchases. This virtual currency can be used in place of actual currency and assist your future purchases. Now, here’s exactly how Stars convert into real money:
In all, you need a total of 1,250 Stars to claim £5 worth of store credits. This translates to 5000 Stars if you’re going to make a purchase of £20. That’s the usual price for most indie or older games on the PlayStation Store. In the grand scheme of things, 50 Stars doesn’t look like much, but hey, patience has been a tested trait among PlayStation Plus users lately.
While there’s no official word from Sony in the context of this move being a way to please fans, the timing of all this clearly speaks in favor of it.
Can the New PlayStation Plus Pricing Be Justified?
A few months ago, when Sony dropped the bomb regarding the subscription’s new pricing, fans were simply not happy. The pricing for PS Plus Essential went from $59.99 or £49.99 to $79.99 or £59.99. PS Plus Extra’s price went from $99.99 or £83.99 to $134.99 or £99.99. And the pricing for PS Plus Premium went from $119.99/£99.99 to $159.99/£119.99.
This was a massive hike, and Sony wasn’t too clear about how it would improve the subscription. What added fuel to the fire were lackluster titles added over the last few months and little to no silver lining for more PS exclusives being added to the collection. If this doesn’t change soon, members will likely let go of their subscriptions altogether.
However, all hope is not lost, as the quality of games being added to the catalog seems to be taking a gentle shift. This month, massive titles like Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, Grand Theft Auto V, and Metal: Hellsinger are being added. These are highly acclaimed titles that are often worth the full price alone, and this is a fraction of the total number of games that are being added to the collection.
Furthermore, a recent Reddit post speculated how new PS2 games might make their way to PlayStation Plus soon enough. The PS2 era had some of the best games come to fans, and it’ll be a great idea to have many titles make a comeback. Additionally, this adds a lot of value to the subscription overall, since backward compatibility isn’t a thing for PlayStation users otherwise.
