At face value, Sony PlayStation’s decision to skip this year’s Gamescom might seem surprising and puzzling. After all, Gamescom is one of the biggest gaming events of the year, and PlayStation is missing a great opportunity to display everything prepared for the second half of the year and beyond.

However, this is the fifth year in a row that Sony is doing the same thing, and with a consistent lack of major announcements shown in recent Sony-organized events like the State of Play, fans are right to be worried and are all saying the same thing.

Sony PlayStation Doesn’t Have Anything to Show at Gamescom

The recent lackluster State of Play presentation seems to be the major reason behind the decision not to be a part of the biggest games convention this year. Fans have expressed their concerns and frustration over Sony’s release strategy as they don’t have much upcoming content for this year.

Except for the full-fledged Astro Bot title, there aren’t many exclusives coming out this year, which is scheduled for release on September 6. With that said, fans agree that Sony doesn’t have anything to show.

Another used added a sarcastic response to the idea that the company’s absence is surprising, considering their recent State of Play presentation wasn’t particularly well-received.

Moreover, another console fan has even questioned why would they appear and what would they present besides Astro Bot.

Sony Isn’t the only Major Publisher Skipping Gamescom

Joining in a similar decision is another major publisher, Nintendo, as the Japanese video game giant confirmed it will skip Gamescom 2024. While fans are certainly displeased with this decision, Nintendo’s Direct presentation was a stark contrast to Sony’s State of Play.

The Direct offered a close look into upcoming Switch titles, including the mass-anticipated return of the Mario & Luigi RPG series with the new game, Brothership, and a brand new Zelda title starring the princess herself, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, which will land on September 26. Moreover, the Direct also gave fans a long-awaited first look at Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, with a 2025 release window.

With Nintendo’s decision to miss Gamescom, fans are left denied of a possible Switch 2 reveal.

To circle back to Sony, the future is not all bleak. While there will be no major franchise reveals in the fiscal year, a rumored Showcase is coming in at a later date this year. It looks like they will present the PS5 heir, PS5 Pro. However, until that happens these are all just rumors and fans need to face the sad truth.

What are your thoughts on Sony missing out on Gamescom? Is this because they don’t have anything to show or is this something they are used to now? Will there be a Showcase later this year? Let us know in the comments.
