Why was Attack on Titan transferred from WIT Studio to MAPPA?

Attack on Titan’s three producers, Kensuke Tateishi, Toshihiro Maeda, and Tetsuya Kinoshita, were interviewed for the November issue of Newtype magazine. In the interview, they discussed a variety of topics, including the rationale behind switching the anime’s final-season production studio from Wit to Mappa. After consulting with Wit Studio, it was agreed that The Final Season would be produced by a new production company while season three was still in production. One of the reasons is because the protagonist is seen gazing out at the ocean at the conclusion of season three, which signals a turning point in the narrative. Additionally, they wanted the animation to progress even more as creators.

“Through many talks with Wit Studio, we understood that the continuation would be difficult, so we looked for a new studio. Kinoshita, Maeda, and I divided the searching duties among ourselves, but most studios turned us down. Everyone understood what big shoes they had to fill, and we were told by dozens of studios that they emphatically could not accept. “

Tateishi said ,“The only studio that said they would consider it was MAPPA. When we talked to WIT about it, they said they could rest easy knowing it was in MAPPA’s hands. The producers agreed, so the production shifted to MAPPA.”

Kinoshita added, “MAPPA took the matter firmly into their hands, saying, ‘Attack on Titan should have a proper ending for the sake of the fans,’ which also made a strong impression on us.”

The subject of the interview was MBS’s continued membership on the Anime Production Committee following the transfer of broadcasting rights to the NHK. Maeda claimed that MBS was under no obligation to invest after selling the broadcast rights, but their love for the show outweighed that rationale. Tateishi added that he was the one who advised airing the animation on NHK in order to reach as many people as possible in Japan, despite the fact that the number of broadcasting channels grew with each season. He was incredibly shocked by MBS’s choice to keep funding a program that will air on another network. He believes he owes the NHK and MBS a lot.
