The Boys Season 4 has arrived with a three-episode premiere, and fans are all raises for the latest installment of the show. The show picks up where it left off, with Mother’s Milk serving as the leader of the group, and Annie January officially joining The Boys, working in tandem with the CIA.
As expected from The Boys, with its hyper-violent action scenes and gratuitous nudity, there was also some insane political and social commentary about the socio-cultural landscape of the United States of America. This includes allusions to everything that happened between the Seasons, such as the trial of Amber Heard and Johnny Depp.
The Deep indirectly references Amber Heard’s trial in The Department of Dirty Tricks
On One-on-One with Haliey Miller, an in-universe talk show in the world of The Boys, we see the Deep given an interview, possibly in response to the one that his supposedly now ex-wife, Cassandra Schwartz, game in the finale of Season 3, with regards to her tell-all book, In Too Deep, which allegedly narrates how she wished to get away from The Deep, and how she managed to do it.
The Deep refutes a lot of claims made in the book, calling some of them ‘racist’ despite it being secretly accurate (given that the season seems pretty focused on exploring his relationship with his Octopus girlfriend, Ambrosius). The Deep is also quick to label Cassandra as a disturbed unstable woman, saying:
“…just a racist rumor, and a ridiculous lie, perpetuated by a jilted and emotionally unstable and hysterical woman. Who, let’s be clear, pooped in my bed”
This, of course, is a reference to similar allegations made against Amber Heard during her public trial in the Johnny Depp defamation case, where the actor claimed similar behavior from Amber Heard.
The Deep is never going to be redeemed, but he is done being a wuss on Season 4
The Deep is ready to do anything that Homelander tells him, and for a while, the character has been living up to the pre-Momoa image of Aquaman: all he does is talk to (and make love to) fish. However, upon being prompted by Sister Sage, The Deep stood up to Ashley Barrett, telling her off pretty aggressively that she could not talk to him the way she had been for a while.
The Deep might be well on his way to gaining some of his confidence back, and maybe give up his attitude that makes him the least useful member of The Seven. The season in general seems to be focused on uniting supes against humanity, such that they view themselves as above them, which echoes Homelanders’ chilling commandment from the show’s trailer to what can only be assumed is other supes if not The Seven: “You’ll no longer be beloved celebrities. You will be wrathful Gods.”
While The Boys might be on their way to turning some supes to their side as well, it seems The Deep has already chosen a side, and he is going to play for keeps.
