The Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre has been dominated by the likes of League of Legends and Dota 2 for years. With a new challenger approaching in the form of Predecessor, players might want to play this one.

After the fall of Epic Games’ MOBA, Paragon, Robbie Singh has spent the last two years developing his own third-person MOBA in the form of Predecessor. Creating Omeda Studios, the team used Paragon’s assets and Singh’s love for the genre to bring Predecessor to life.

So far, the team has found early success. The trajectory has been so positive, there’s community tournaments being held on a weekly basis. If you love the competitive nature MOBAs like League of Legends bring to the table, Predecessor is right up your alley.

In an exclusive FandomWire interview, Singh talked extensively about Predecessor and how the project became a reality. When the topic of esports arose, Singh was eager to discuss Predecessor’s future in the esports market.

Within the first week of Predecessor’s early access, Singh saw players participating in community tournaments. And because the game was still fresh, there was no replay system to properly view the matches. Players would have to get creative.

The teams would stream Discord, and then the commentator would restream their Discord onto Twitch. And we were like if that isn’t validation that people want to play competitively and watch competitive Predecessor, we don’t know what is.

Omeda Studios has since added a replay system to host these tournaments more efficiently, about two months after early access launched. Tournaments are still happening every weekend across multiple countries.

Predecessor players want to test their skills against the best and Singh said they will be adding a ranked mode soon. If the community tournaments keep afloat, you can expect Predecessor to make a splash in esports alongside other MOBAs like Dota 2 and League of Legends.

Can Predecessor Take Over League of Legends?

It's definitely in the cards.
It’s definitely in the cards.

While it’s too early to say if Predecessor will kill League of Legends, the amount of players engaged with the project already looks promising.

Most new MOBAs have a hard time finding their footing. It’s difficult to break into the already established mold of League of Legends, Dota 2, and Smite. We’ve seen others like Paragon and Heroes of the Storm end development due to a lack of interest from the community.

Predecessor is different from the rest; it’s the only MOBA on the market to be from the third-person perspective. This feature alone makes the skill cap much higher because every single spell and ability is a skill shot, requiring the players to aim and shoot. Also, there’s crossplay enabled between PC and consoles. Allowing players to play with whoever they want.

Predecessor is free to play through its Open Beta. What are your thoughts on this new MOBA? Let us know in the comments what you think!
