According to some sources, production on the franchise’s upcoming eighth installment has stalled. As a result, the film’s budget is ballooning, leading to a very high break-even point. Therefore, the film will likely have a hard time making money at the box office, and here is everything Mission: Impossible fans need to know about it.
New Report Reveals Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible 8 Risks Going Over Budget
Actor Tom Cruise is returning to the Mission: Impossible franchise for an upcoming eighth installment. Although filming on the project started in 2022, it was put on hold due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. As a result, the film has already seen a considerable delay.

According to a report from The Daily Mail, production on the eighth part has been once again delayed. An accident involving a roughly $29 million submarine resulted in further delays and may also have greatly impacted the film’s budget.
As per sources, the film’s delays have resulted in a ballooning budget that is reaching the $400 million mark. If the reports are true, the film could end up becoming the most expensive entry in the franchise.
Furthermore, the budget will further expand when accounting for the massive marketing costs of approximately $100 million, taking the total budget to $500 million. The film will likely need to make at least $500 million simply to break even and at least a $1 billion gross to make a considerable profit.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Was a Low Point For the Tom Cruise Franchise
The troubles of the untitled eighth film are further exasperated by the reported failure of the most recent seventh entry. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning was released in theaters on July 12, 2023.

Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, the film underperformed at the box office. The film managed to gross roughly $567.5 million at the global box office, against a reported budget of $290 million. Therefore, the film was a major low point for the long-running franchise.
While those figures mean the film turned a profit, the collection was significantly less than the sixth installment. The sixth entry collected $791 million globally, becoming the highest-grossing movie in the franchise. The seventh movie was also the lowest-grossing entry since the third installment.
Considering the franchise has never delivered a billion-dollar movie, the breakeven point for Mission: Impossible 8 seems extremely high. As a result, the upcoming entry faces an uphill battle and it will be interesting to see if the franchise manages to turn around its fortunes.
Mission: Impossible 8 is currently scheduled to release on May 23, 2025.
