The action-adventure puzzle platformer title, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was released way back in 2003. It is still close to the hearts of many gamers around the world. The game was developed and published by Ubisoft and is one of the highest-rated platformer games released on PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time defined the upcoming platformer titles.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is now 20 years old and sort of gave a new start to the franchise. The game was released after Ubisoft acquired the rights to the franchise in 2021. The game’s sale was slow initially but it soon gained popularity eventually becoming a commercial success.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: A Franchise Reviving Title
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is set in the titular location of Persia with a storyline that follows an unnamed prince who tells about his adventures to a listener. The game has been praised for its gameplay and combat mechanics that were focused on platforming abilities where the prince battled it out against enemies made of sand.
The game fascinated players with the gameplay that held challenging puzzles and exciting battles at balance with an engaging storyline and soothing soundtrack. Players were also able to rewind time if need be using the Dagger of Time to freeze and kill enemies. The game allowed players to explore the city of Persia while they roamed around performed several actions and solved puzzles.
There are various types of traps every step of the way such as pike pits, arrow traps, wall-mounted blades, saws, and spinning spiked stakes and players had to climb and run across walls, and onto and along a wall. This all coupled coupled with amazing graphics and excellent fights made the whole thing a thrilling adventure.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time featured one of the most elaborate and stunning animation and artwork in video games and it defined how well a game could look and double down with its gameplay mechanics. The game had a simple yet amazing control system that allowed players to move in any direction and interact with their surroundings.
The Sands of Time is critically acclaimed with a Metascore of 92 and was also nominated for and won multiple awards including the Best Action-Adventure Game. The game made way for other games in the franchise that retained everything from detailed combat to impressive visuals and storyline.
Three sequels were released titled Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, and Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, and received positive reviews. Many also hail The Sands of Time as one of the best puzzle platformer titles ever released, bringing the franchise back to popularity. The whole atmosphere of the game had players asking for more of it.
Ubisoft announced a remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time announced at Ubisoft Forward 2020 and was under development at Ubisoft Mumbai and Ubisoft Pune, initially slated to release in January 2021. However, it was later delayed to March and then Ubisoft announced in May 2022 that Ubisoft Montreal, the team that worked on the original, would now be taking over the development.
There is no information on what is going on with the game right now but Ubisoft rebooted the remake earlier this year and said that the game is “currently in the conception phase,” via a new Q&A and FAQ on its website. Ubisoft eased the curiosity of the fans who have been waiting for the game forever saying: “But fear not: it’s very much alive.” There have only been speculations over the release of the game since then and no other details have been shared by Ubisoft yet.
