Jake Gyllenhaal has already scored a new role in a comic book movie, thanks to his involvement in Prophet. The announcement of the movie adaptation for the Image Comics character Prophet, created by Rob Liefeld in 1992, was made in 2021.

Gyllenhaal is set to portray the central character, a supersoldier with a background reminiscent of Captain America or The Winter Soldier. Gyllenhaal’s entry into the Prophet project followed the conclusion of Spider-Man: Far From Home, where Mysterio’s fate seemed sealed. Despite a somewhat gradual development process since the initial announcement, Gyllenhaal’s role in Prophet presents a more exciting and different kind of comic book movie opportunity for the talented actor. After all, him just coming back as Mysterio wouldn’t be anywhere near as interesting.

Rob Liefeld, co-creator of Marvel’s Deadpool, introduced John Prophet in 1992’s Youngblood. Emerging from stasis after four decades, the master swordsman mistakes a superhero team for captors, leading to a confrontation. While possessing typical superpowers such as enhanced stamina, agility, and strength beyond the ordinary, Prophet’s actual story revolves around adapting to the present world. That is in addition to his response to facing brutal deeds under Philip Omens during the Vietnam War.

In the initial run, Prophet wore an extravagant armor suit. In 2012, Liefeld reintroduced the character with a more average appearance. Set 10,000 years in the future, Brandon Graham’s series aimed to portray Prophet as a superior version of Conan the Barbarian in a dystopian outer space. The first arc revealed numerous Prophet clones scattered across the galaxy, each version illustrated by a different artist, enriching the character’s legacy in Image Comics. Sam Hargrave will serve as the film’s director, so it remains to be seen how the movie will turn out whenever it is released.
