Following the disappearance of a young child from a post-Soviet town, players will use exploration, puzzle solving and unique combat mechanics to solve the mystery and find out answers they may not want to know. Taking place between two worlds, Unholy features a unique experience all players of survival horror games will enjoy.

  • Two parallel worlds to explore. The grey and cold reality of a brutalist post-soviet Eastern European town and the creepy and twisted world of Unholy, a grotesque society ruled by a relentless priest caste.
  • An intense psychological horror experience driven by a deep, dark narrative storyline played out with captivating visuals based on the works of reputed dark artist Tomasz Strzałkowski (Duality Games Art director and founder).
  • A unique gameplay blend that combines meticulous exploration, intriguing puzzle solving, infiltration and stealth with intriguing shooting dynamics.
  • An intriguing combat system. Use four different emotions: anger, shock, sadness and desire to interact with the environment (destroy obstacles, trigger mechanisms, overload circuits, illuminate your way) or to confuse, lure or damage your opponents.
  • Masks! Everybody in the unholy world hides behind a mask and it can be the difference between life or death. Build your own mask to get new skills and improve your abilities or wear other masks to infiltrate, confuse your enemies and impersonate your opponents.

Unholy – Psychologically Mundane?

As well as the news that the game is launching soon, we recently got our hands on a preview copy of the game. One of our video game critics labelled it as “Unholy may be the best looking indie game that I have ever played.” but at the same time also commented “Unfortunately, outside of the gorgeous visuals, the Unholy preview seemingly doesn’t have much else to offer.”.

Whether the final product is different enough that the compliments stay and the criticisms fall away is unknown, but for a psychological horror game, it appears to be a very by-the-books affair, at least for our resident horror fanatic.

With religious overtones, seriously dark story beats and more to offer, Unholy has the opportunity to be a seriously unnerving affair. Atmospherically the game promises a dark and dank experience, as any first person horror game should, and with similarities to Stranger Things with the dual, parallel worlds it’s clear where the games target audience is. Will you be one of those buying it on release?
