There is one interesting bit of an anecdote behind the casting of his 2003 film Kill Bill: Volume 1, as the director had previously claimed that the role of Bill he wrote, he had three stars in his mind. Among those actors, one was Bruce Willis, who nearly cast in this epic role which the director famously referred to as “evil James Bond.”
Quentin Tarantino Shares Bruce Willis Nearly Got Bill’s Role in Kill Bill
In a candid interview, the Academy Award-winning director Quentin Tarantino shared that he wrote the part of one of the iconic characters of his titular film, keeping in mind three talented actors before actor David Carradine nailed the part. Talking about Kill Bill, he said that he initially wrote the role of Bill for Warren Beatty, plus Bruce Willis was also one of his choices.
“I think John Travolta is a fantastic actor. I think Bruce Willis is a fantastic actor. Harvey Keitel is an amazing actor. [But] I’ve yet to write a character from the 2000s on that, I thought that they were the perfect person to do it. I mean, frankly, the closest would have been Bruce. Because I wrote [the character of] Bill for Warren Beatty, and it ended up not working out,” Tarantino explained.
He continued, “And then I cast David Carradine, and kind of rewrote it for David Carradine. Bruce would have been my third choice… When I read the original version of Kill Bill, it kind of cracks me up now because it’s the Warren Beatty version.”
Bruce Willis had previously worked with the directing genius on his cult classic film Pulp Fiction, so for his martial art movie, he thought the actor would be the best fit for Bill’s role.
“When I look at that original version, you know, Bill was a little bit more of an evil James Bond type. And frankly, to tell you the truth, I probably wouldn’t had to have rewritten it that much if I had cast Bruce in it. Bruce could have actually, played that evil James Bond kind of character, and I would have just leaned into his personality maybe just a little bit more. A little less Cristal. A little bit more Coors, all right. A little less champagne, a little more beer.”
Quentin Tarantino’s directorial Kill Bill Volume: 1 was a box office hit, and it grossed over $180 million at the global box office and earned many critically acclaimed awards. The film stars Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, and Julie Dreyfus, among other incredible stars.
