The one name that links to some of the greatest movies like Django Unchained, Speed, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, and Pulp Fiction is Quentin Tarantino. Starting his career in the early 1990s with Reservoir Dogs, the notable director has enlightened Hollywood with his ingenuity, imprinting his works into the hall of fame. However, the director is determined to abide by his 10-movie plan and retire soon after The Movie Critic’s release in 2024.

One thing that suffered amid his strict filmography plan was his version of a Star Trek movie. Quentin Tarantino was interested in directing a remake of Star Trek that would be distinct from the other films of the sci-fi franchise. However, that may never come to fruition, as the director steps towards his final film.

Screenwriter, Mark L. Smith, who had worked with Quentin Tarantino in Bad Robot, confirmed the fact that the latter was keen on imparting a fresh perspective on a Star Trek movie. While fans are assured the film would have been nothing short of epic, chances are low it may ever come to fruition.

Talking to Collider recently, Smith recalled his discussions with the gifted director. He explained how Tarantino pondered over the matter, of whether Star Trek would be ideal for his last movie. Smith shared,

“It was a different thing, but this was such a particular different type of story that Quentin wanted to tell with it that it fit my kind of sensibilities. So I wrote that, Quentin and I went back and forth, he was gonna do some stuff on it, and then he started worrying about the number, his kind of unofficial number of films. I remember we were talking, and he goes, “If I can just wrap my head around the idea that Star Trek could be my last movie, the last thing I ever do. Is this how I want to end it?’”

Smith implied that Tarantino probably never bought the idea of ending his iconic film career with Star Trek. Nevertheless, he was blown away by the director’s ideation of the probable film. After Tarantino proposed his version of Star Trek, Smith was asked to draft a script for the film, which apparently still sits on the director’s desk without a future. Commenting on the potential of it, Smith added,

“But it would be the greatest Star Trek film, not for my writing, but just for what Tarantino was gonna do with it. It was just a b**ls-out kind of thing.”

Unfortunately, the film sphere might never witness the possible masterpiece, a reboot of the greatest sci-fi franchise Star Trek because Tarantino wanted to wrap up his career with a better movie.

While the Pulp Fiction director stated that it may not be written in stone, he does not wish to steer away from the plan. Assuringly, Tarantino had drafted his entire career around this plan, carefully selecting his movies. As per Digital Spy, in a director’s roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tarantino said,

“I’m going to write novels and cinema literature, stuff like that. I would add more to that. If it actually gets to the place where you can’t show 35mm film in theatres anymore and everything is digital projection, I won’t even make it to 60.”

Sticking to his beliefs, the director turned 60 this year, and there is some truth that even the film industry has been digitalized to an extent. Hence, Tarantino feels the time has come, to step down from filmmaking, and resort to writing novels. The plot of his 10th film, The Movie Critic is relatively unknown as of now but spins around movie critic Pauline Kael and shall be shot in LA, the place where Tarantino began his career.
