Despite the criticism, however, the MCU flick starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular superhero ended up banking more than $900 million at the worldwide box office (via The Numbers). A renowned filmmaker and screenwriter, Raimi is popular for having helmed the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man trilogy and is also hailed for his exceptional work in cult horror films like the Evil Dead series. And while the Doctor Strange sequel garnered mixed reviews, fans nevertheless believe that Raimi gifted them a masterpiece.

The mystical adventure outing was initially slated to be helmed by Scott Derrickson who directed the first Doctor Strange movie. But things didn’t work out owing to โ€œreal creative differencesโ€ between him and Marvel boss Kevin Feige (via The Playlist). And that is when Raimi swooped in and bewitched fans with his talent.

Sam Raimi’s Potential MCU Comeback Could Be What the Studio Needs

Although the 64-year-old director doesn’t have any plans set in stone regarding a potential MCU return, he admitted that the idea did appeal to him. โ€œI donโ€™t have any plans,โ€ he told The Wrap. โ€œBut I would love it!โ€

Meanwhile, there have already been rumors about how Raimi may be reportedly planning on directing a fourth Spider-Man film. “I think if we were to make a fourth Spider-Man film, weโ€™d probably have to figure out the journey that Tobey Maguire his character would be going on, and what obstacles he had to overcome to achieve that growth personally,” he stated in the same conversation with The Wrap.

Raimi could also be the perfect choice for spearheading Avengers: Secret Wars. Not only does he have the experience and expertise for it but the Boy Kills World producer is himself hoping that the studio approaches him for the project. “They haven’t asked me yet. I hope they do,” he admitted (via Screen Rant).
