There was an almost universal sigh of relief among Lee Child disciples when Prime Video announced a streaming series adaptation of the Reacher character. However, apprehension set in when Alan Ritchson was chosen to portray the ultra-popular machismo character.

While Tom Cruise was undeniably the world’s biggest movie star when he portrayed Jack Reacher in the film series, his casting diverged significantly from the character described in the books. The decision to cast a relatively lesser-known comedic actor for such a cherished role raised concerns among many fans, myself included.

Nevertheless, after witnessing Ritchson’s performance in the pilot, doubts vanished. Such was the confidence in his portrayal that a second season was commissioned shortly after the first. M.N. Miller, our film and television critic, hailed the second season of Reacher as “enthralling, exciting, and relentlessly entertaining,” declaring Alan Ritchson as “the best Reacher ever.”

Given such acclaim, it seems almost certain that a third season of Reacher is on the horizon. Here at FandomWire, we delve into the potential directions and prospects for this anticipated continuation.

Has Reacher been renewed for Season 3?

Official Renewal Status: Renewed!

Reacher is renewed for a third season.

Well, let’s not bury the lead. For the first time in Prime Video’s history, Reacher was renewed before its second season debut. It’s worth noting that such a decision is rare in today’s streaming landscape. Many series face reviews or cancellations after their second season due to long-term cost-cutting strategies. Fortunately, this gamble paid significant dividends for Prime Video.

From a critical standpoint, the second season currently boasts a flawless Rotten Tomatoes 100% critics’ score based on 36 reviews. The audience response is also commendable, with an 84% approval rating. This month’s special three-episode premiere has become the most-watched series on Prime since the fall 2022 debut of Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power.

According to the all-powerful Nielsen ratings, they accumulated a staggering 1.84 billion minutes in the first season across all episodes. This achievement marked the first time in Prime Video’s history that a series topped the Nielsen ratings in March 2022. While official ratings for the sophomore season are pending until mid-January, experts anticipate even more substantial figures.

What is Reacher Season 2 about?

The sophomore effort is based on Lee Child’s eleventh novel in the series, Bad Luck and Trouble. The second season begins with Reacher (Ritchson) receiving a coded message from Nealy (Maria Sten), conveying grim news: one of the members of their disbanded special investigator unit has been murdered.

As they delve deeper into the investigation, they discover that their former colleagues, whom Reacher considers his only family, are being targeted. Gradually, they are hunted down until only two remain: Karla Dixon (Breakout Kings’s Serirda Swan), an old flame of the ex-MP, and David O’Donnell (The Sandman’s Shaun Sipos), the unit’s former playboy who is now a family man.

The second season also features esteemed actors such as Robert Patrick (The Terminator), Domenick Lombardozzi (The Wire), Ferdinand Kingsley (Mank), Luke Bilyk (Degrassi: The Next Generation), and Shannon Kook (Shadowhunters). Notably, Malcolm Goodwin made a cameo this season in the episode “A Night at the Symphony,” reprising his role as Oscar Finlay.

What Could Reacher Season 3 be about?

Reacher’s third season could go a myriad of ways. There are 29 books in the Lee Child series, with The Killing Floor used in the premiere season. As we mentioned above, Bad Luck and Trouble for the follow-up. Unlike Prime Video’s Bosch, the smash hit has not yet combined stories from different novels to form a single season. Will that change in the future?

The popular book series has surpassed 100,000,000 copies sold. According to the website The Bookseller, this puts Child’s creation ahead of the Harry Potter series. A Lee Child novel is read every 20 seconds in the world today. That said, picking a popular source material is critical to viewer retention, especially when moving into three or more seasons.

Per Straw Poll, the most popular Reacher books are One Shot, Killing Floor, The Affair, Echo Burning, and Bad Luck and Trouble. The two have already been used for the Prime Video series and One Shot for one of the Tom Cruise films, That Leaves of The Affair and Echo Burning.

Considering Ritschon is no longer getting younger, the latter deals with the former MP’s wandering origins, which may be a good fit. However, the entry above does have a powerful female character, which is in high demand for movie or series adaptations.

The second season of Reacher is now streaming on Prime Video.
