Bong Joon-ho explains the Robert Pattinson starrer Mickey 17 is “A Sci-Fi but a human story”

He explained that it’s the story of a simple man who ends up saving the world. The movie is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7 and follows a space colonist known as the expendable—the ones who do the most dangerous work and often die in the process, only to be brought back to life through human printing technology.

THR reported that the lead in the novel is the seventh version of Mickey, but for the movie, that figure has been upped. The filmmaker said,

“The number is the number of times he dies. I killed him ten times more. It’s a sci-fi movie, but it’s a human story.”

IndieWire reports that Robert Pattinson’s character says in the trailer:

“As an expendable, they made me work my a** off on one mission after another. Even on my 17th go-around, I hate dying.”

The interesting twist of the movie is the fact that Mickey 17 happens to be alive at the same time as Mickey 18, hinting at Pattinson in a dual role with different accents. This leads to more chaos as people have to now deal with multiple Mickeys. Actor Steven Yeun’s character simply suggests that they should play ‘Rock Paper Scissors’ to decide who is the loser and kill’em.

Robert Pattinson Notes that He Thought Mickey 17 had the ‘Most Unusual, Bizarre, and Funny Script’

The Batman actor, who made a surprise appearance at Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon, shared with the audience that he has been the biggest fan of Bong Joon-ho for many years, adding that he’s his hero. The actor, who recently welcomed his first child with girlfriend Suki Waterhouse, mentioned via EW,

“I got sent the script; I was told, ‘You’re going to love the script, but the part is impossible’. That was very, very exciting to me. I thought it was the most unusual, bizarre, and funny script.”

“Mickey 17 is someone who has the lowest expectations of his life, and yet the world keeps pushing those expectations to the point where he has a job that tortures him every day. And then 18 comes along, and he’s got frontal lobe damage, no self-control, and a and a libido out of control. It’s like playing an evil brother or twin.”
