While Iron Man marked the beginning of MCU’s dominance over the blockbuster landscape, the second outing in the franchise lacked the aspects that made the first one so iconic. Often considered the weakest in the franchise, Iron Man 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L Jackson, lacks a meaningful story along with several other factors that work against the movie.

Samuel L Jackson Isn’t a Big Fan of His Character’s Treatment in Iron Man 2

While Samuel L Jackson loves playing the badass old Nick Fury, he didn’t have much fun reprising the role for Iron Man 2. Like most characters appearing in the sequel, there wasn’t much for Jackson to do with the material he was given, and the Pulp Fiction Star despised it. Per MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, Jackson didn’t like being a talker for his entire screen time, as the movie didn’t move him into the badass zone he has become synonymous within the later entries.

“When Iron Man 2 was released, Samuel L. Jackson said, ‘We still haven’t moved Nick Fury into the badass zone. He’s still just kind of a talker.'”

Fortunately, his Nicky Fury finally got to engage in action sequences in  The Winter Solider under the Russo brothers’ direction, which made sense following the film’s plot. And while it didn’t involve the actor running, Fury would find himself in an enthralling car chase, which was greatly influenced by The French Connection and the Jason Bourne films.

Samuel L Jackson Intends to Keep Going as Nick Fury

Although it took Nick Fury a while to catch up steam within the MCU, as of now, he is one of the few remaining characters from the original faction, and he intends to keep it that way. He told Empire Magazine:

“I love playing him, and I love the fact that they’re opening him up to all these other possibilities and this whole life that he has. So hopefully I’m not done, and in this new phase of the MCU I’ll still be floating in and out of there somehow, some way.”
