Throughout the films, his real name is rarely uttered and he has been referred by other names. The fear and paranoia around the character seeped into the minds of the characters. Although it is never explained why the majority of the characters refuse to utter his name in the film series, the books provided an answer to this conundrum.

Voldemort is one of the most terrifying and iconic on-screen villains in the Harry Potter films, played with such menace by Ralph Fiennes. The character maintained an eerie sense of fear and mystery around him and this created a terrifying reputation among the characters of the Wizarding World. The majority of the characters refused to utter his real name in the films.

They referred to him as ‘You-Know-Who’ or ‘He Who Must Not Be Named’. The reason for this fear was not explained in the films, but the book series (especially the Deathly Hallows books)  provided an answer to this. As Watchmojo puts it, a curse was placed on his name and Voldemort could locate anyone who uttered his name.

He would send his henchmen including the Death Eaters to hunt down the individuals and punish them so that they do not repeat it again. A scene showing this was supposed to be in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 but was ultimately deleted from the film. It would certainly have cleared the confusion about the matter if it were included, just like in the books.

“My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh, and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere. So, I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way.”

It remains to be seen whether this new incarnation stands up to the original films. Radcliffe recently appeared in season 4 of Miracle Workers. He played Al Yankovic in the brilliant 2022 film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
