Zack Snyder continues his Netflix partnership with his space opera Rebel Moon and I was thrilled to get the chance to chat with him about it. Whether you love or hate him, you can’t deny Zack Snyder’s impact on film during his career. From 300 to Watchmen to his time in the now-extinct DCEU, he has a style all his own; you can easily tell when you’re watching a Snyder film.
Rebel Moon: Part 2 – The Scargiver is the conclusion to Zack Snyder’s space opera. The story came from Snyder, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten. The films take place in a galaxy ruled by the Motherworld, who uses their military, called the Imperium, to threaten a farming colony on the moon of Veldt. The main character, Kora (played by Sofia Boutella), ventures on a quest to recruit warriors from across the galaxy to make a stand against the Imperium.

I began the interview by greeting Zack Snyder and telling him it was a pleasure to talk with him; he said he was happy to be there and was very genuine the whole time. I followed that up by asking him about his inspiration for Rebel Moon: all major sci-fi epics, with another unexpected source.
“Of course, as I’ve mentioned famously, Heavy Metal Magazine.”
Snyder talked about how Heavy Metal Magazine had a big influence on the films, especially Part 2. We then talked about his favorite scenes to shoot in the film: the epic battle towards the end where everything is blowing up and a more intimate scene that was a real bonding moment for the cast and crew.
I then asked him if there’s a dream project he has after a career in big-budget films like 300 and Man of Steel, and the response he gave was quite surprising:
“I would love to do a kind of small movie right now. I’m kind of in the mood to do something kind of small and sort of shot on location, something a little bit more manageable.”
I have no idea what a small Zack Snyder movie would look like, but the idea is certainly intriguing. We also talked about some of his favorite films and series of the year, which is how I always like to wrap up my interviews. He mentioned a recent Netflix project, 3 Body Problem, as well as being excited for Alex Garland’s latest film Civil War. He also had more praise to give a certain Best Picture/Director duo from this past year:
“Still really excited by what Chris (Nolan) was able to achieve with Oppenheimer, that was amazing and super fun.”
It was a lot of fun getting to talk with Zack Snyder and some of the cast from Rebel Moon: Part 2 – The Scargiver, so keep an eye out for more from those interviews this week!
