Star Wars is one of the biggest movie franchises in the world. However, after 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, which received poor critic reviews and divided the fanbase, no films have been released. Lucasfilm instead pivoted to the small screen where it continued making new projects on Disney+. While some were successful, others weren’t.

The Mandalorian kicked off the Star Wars universe on Disney+, but not all the subsequent projects generated the same hype. Fans of the galaxy far far away were also getting anxious over the lack of new films on the big screen. Thankfully, the period of a dry spell is over and Daisy Ridley’s Rey will again be the flag bearer of the new set of films announced.

At the 2023 annual Star Wars Celebration fan convention, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced one new film with Daisy Ridley. The actress will reprise her role as Rey in a film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and written by Steven Knight. The story is going to take place 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. It will focus on Rey as a Jedi master rebuilding the broken Jedi Order as various powers try to tear it down.

The actress walked out on stage to deafening cheers and said that she loved being back. Ridley didn’t give any additional information on the project. Jon Favreau said in an interview with Variety after the panel that he loved seeing Ridley back in the beloved fantastical universe and couldn’t wait to see where the film goes. He said.

“I always find it really satisfying, encouraging when you have people who come through Star Wars, come back to Star Wars. It shows you how strong that community is and how big of a bond you develop. For Daisy to come back and be part of where this is going, I’m excited to see where all at what happens there.”

Fans are curious to see what side of Rey- Skywalker or Palpatine, will be dominant in the film. Ridley returns after delivering one of the most successful Star Wars films, The Force Awakens (2015), which grossed $2 billion at the box office and began the sequel trilogy. Also, many are clamoring for stars like Adam Driver and John Boyega to reprise their roles in the upcoming film. But that’s not all. Kennedy also announced two more Star Wars films at the convention.

Kathleen Kennedy also announced that James Mangold and Dave Filoni will direct Star Wars films. His film will serve as the climax for those two shows along with The Book of Boba Fett. Mangold on the other hand said that his film will explore the Force and its origins.

He explained that it will be set 25,000 years before any of the projects ever done in the Star Wars universe. He said that the movie will explore the details of the Force. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter:

“When I first started talking to Kathy about doing one of these pictures, what occurred to me was thinking about what kind of genre of movies within Star Wars I wanted to do and I thought about a Biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments, about the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from, when did we discover it, when did we learn how to use it?”

Mangold is a busy man because he will also be writing and directing DC’s Swamp Thing project. It remains to be seen if all three projects will see the light of day because Lucasfilm and Star Wars have garnered quite a reputation for having multiple films in development, but nothing actually getting made, let alone released. It will interesting to see the journeys of these three films. No release dates for the films were announced.
