After going on an adventure with Mr. Poopybutthole, Hugh Jackman, and the gang in the season 7 premiere of Rick and Morty, episode 2 again focuses on more of Rick’s antics — this time with his oafish son-in-law Jerry. Not shockingly, they’re at each other’s throats.

WARNING: If you have not watched Season 7, Episode 2 of Rick and Morty, “The Jerrick Trap,” you should stop reading now because this article contains MASSIVE spoilers.

Rick and Morty Season 7 Episode 2 SPOILER Breakdown

The episode begins with Jerry approaching Rick to get his rake back from his neighbor, Gene, who claims he doesn’t have it. Of course, in typical Rick fashion, he devises a sci-fi filled way that involves them swapping consciousnesses, so that Rick can pose as Jerry and be more assertive.

However, things do not go according to plan, as when Rick’s consciousness is transported into the body of Jerry, Rick finds himself overwhelmed by disgust at Jerry’s meager existence, and shoots himself (while in Jerry’s body). And by a confluence of events, Jerry (in Rick’s body) ends up dead himself.

As fans of Rick and Morty would expect, Rick had devised a contingency in case anything like this happened — virtually ensuring his immortality. However, because of the mind swap procedure, Rick and Jerry’s brain chemistry becomes inextricably spliced together, and the artificial intelligence in Rick’s lab is unable to put their brains back together properly, causing their personalities to meld.

Meanwhile, while out running the rounds for Rick, Morty is kidnapped by some low-level goons of a crime lord, Chuxly. Chuxly attempts to return Morty to Rick, but upon discovering that Rick and Jerry’s personalities have become interconnected — meaning Rick is no longer the threat he once was — he attempts to act. However, Rick and Jerry retaliate, shooting a hole through Chuxly, presumably killing him.

Jerry and Rick become unexpected friends, having bonded over the experience of saving their son/grandson. They begin to travel the galaxy as “Burger and Fries,” a criminal duo causing mischief wherever they go. We get a glimpse into some of their antics.

As they travel the universe, Morty, Beth, and Summer go on a search to find the duo, only to be kidnapped by Chuxley, who is still alive, angered, and emboldened by the fact that Rick is now “softer” than he once was.

Realizing that the only way to rescue their family is to become aggressive once again, Jerry and Rick merge themselves into a superorganism called “Jerricky.” A battle ensues, and Jerricky decimates Chuxley’s crew, killing him, and rescuing Morty, Beth, and Summer.

Upon arriving back on Earth, Jerricky tells the family that it plans to wander the galaxy, and Gene comes over to return the rake. After dropping the rake on the ground, Jerricky steps on it, with Jerry and Rick’s heads revealing that their individual consciousnesses are still trapped within the new organism.

We cut to the Smiths having dinner, with Rick and Jerry having been returned to their normal bodies with the consciousnesses separated. And despite their bonding through their adventures with linked consciousnesses, they are still at each other’s throats as usual.

In the post-credits scene, we see Rick’s consciousness as he was trapped in Jerry’s mind trying to escape. It will come as no surprise to fans of the show that Jerry’s view of the world is exceedingly simplistic — as he envisions every machine as being made with gears and springs. It’s a bit of a throwaway gag, but shows some great potential for future exploration.

Like last episode of Rick and Morty served to expand Rick’s arc, so too does “The Jerrick Trap.” In this episode, we get to not only see Rick’s relationship with Jerry grow in unexpected ways, but also proof that he has a deep love for his family. It will be interesting to see where the rest of the season of Rick and Morty takes these characters.
