Last week’s macabre adventure “That’s Amorte” gave Rick and Morty fans what they had been waiting for for much of the season: a true outing with Rick AND Morty. Not only does Episode 5 offer another such adventure, but it’s inarguably the most important episode this season thus far in terms of how it pushes along the show’s narrative.

Rick and Morty Season 7 Episode 5 SPOILER Breakdown
We begin the episode watching what appears to be Rick and Morty returning from an adventure, with the two of them fighting over Rick’s constant mistreatment over Morty. Having had enough, Morty builds an eyepatch device and makes Rick subservient to him — which reveals that this is the origin story of Evil Morty. They go on a rampage, leading into the part of the Evil Morty saga we have seen before.
After Evil Morty left the exploding Citadel, he took up a life finding crystals to preserve his refuge in outer space, allowing him to live a peaceful life alone. However, he finds that his refuge has been disrupted due to Rick’s methods of trying to find Rick Prime by killing all of his decoys.
Evil Morty uses his portal gun to encounter Rick, and after Rick and Morty decide that Evil Morty wants to work with them in a loose “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” alliance, they find what they believe is actually Rick Prime. Yet this is just a decoy that is used to absorb them into a prison.
Via recorded message, Rick Prime reveals that he killed Rick’s wife Diane across all dimensions using an all-powerful weapon. He then pits all of the Ricks that have been captured by the decoy against each other in a battle to the death, with the winner getting a chance to get Diane back. Although Rick knows it’s a ruse, the rest of the Ricks begin to kill one another, until our Rick is the only one standing.
The prison then generates a killer robot with Diane’s face, which the trio of Rick, Morty, and Evil Morty defeat. The prison is then set to self-destruct, but before they are caught in flames, Rick and Evil Morty work together and manage to escape.
Using the information he gathered from the decoy, Rick is able to find the location of Rick Prime. He leaves Morty and Evil Morty behind, but they follow anyway. When Rick encounters Rick Prime, the latter threatens to use the weapon to kill all of Rick’s family members one by one.
To demonstrate his capabilities, Rick Prime uses the weapon to erase Slow Mobius from the infinite realities. A battle ensues, with Rick and Evil Morty getting injured, leaving Rick Prime and Morty the only ones left. However, it is revealed that Evil Morty actually swapped places with the regular Morty, and Evil Morty manages to defeat and restrain Rick Prime.
Evil Morty steals the weapon plans, before reviving Rick and siccing him on Rick Prime. Rick Prime attempts to get Evil Morty to work with him, but Rick beats Rick Prime to death.
Meanwhile, Evil Morty destroys the weapon. He reveals to Rick and Morty that he does not intend to use the weapon for himself, fearing that if he did, the entire universe would come after him. Instead, he just wants to live his peaceful existence, and he has taken the plans to the weapon as leverage to prevent anyone from bothering him.
Before portaling out, Evil Morty asks Rick whether he feels better having killed Rick Prime. This sends Rick into a crisis, as he realizes that getting his ultimate goal of revenge may not have made him feel as good as he thought.
In the post-credits, the wife of Slow Mobius sets out on a quest to figure out what happened to her husband, who in her eyes had just suddenly disappeared. Eventually, she encounters another person who seemingly shares her experience, and they form a blended family.
After the first four episodes of this season of Rick and Morty felt like they were spinning their wheels in terms of the narrative, it’s certainly interesting to see what many fans expected to be the season-long arc crammed into a single episode. It will be interesting to see where the rest of the season and future seasons go narratively now that all of Rick’s goals have apparently been accomplished. At least in the near future, it seems like we will be getting to explore Rick’s lost sense of purpose now that Rick Prime is eliminated.
