When we open the episode, we see Jerry in a dream world, speaking with his dead grandma. He is then revived by Rick and Morty, revealing that he was in the afterlife. Rick tells Jerry that he has been experimenting on him to prove that there is a Heaven to access its infinite energy. However, believing he won’t be able to go to normal Heaven, Rick tells Morty to prepare for a trip to Norway.

In Norway, Rick instructs Morty to revive him after a set time, bringing him back via a clone. However, after Morty says he does not want to kill Rick again, Rick reveals that he has trapped Bigfoot in a Pokéball and that Bigfoot will kill him.

When Bigfoot kills Rick, he is transported to a battlefield where he is killed violently before ending up in real Valhalla. He gets to work on setting up the device to siphon the energy from the afterlife.

Meanwhile, Morty sees Bigfoot grieving over Rick’s body back on Earth. However, it is soon revealed that this is a trap, and Bigfoot kills Morty and attempts to destroy the clone.

Morty goes to Valhalla, where he is initially welcomed with open arms, until he finds that Rick has already caused quite a stir, being accused of witchcraft. Morty then has to battle the Vikings as Rick finishes building his device.

Bigfoot eventually manages to break the containment chamber for the clone, but the clone runs away. Eventually, Bigfoot is captured by the police, but the Vatican intercepts him, and the Pope reveals that he intends to use Bigfoot as a weapon to kill the church’s enemies. Bigfoot is sent to kill Satanists, a secular magazine, and non-denominational candlemakers — all while training and stewing his resentment for Rick.

In Valhalla, Rick completes the device and convinces the Vikings that he is Odin. He issues them the commandment not to go near the device and then brings himself and Morty back to life, where Bigfoot is waiting to kill them. After a skirmish, Rick admits to mistreating Bigfoot but convinces him that the Pope is worse, and Bigfoot agrees to fight back against the Vatican.

After infiltrating the Vatican, the trio encounters the Pope, who has been stealing Rick’s infinite energy. However, the Pope disintegrates them all, causing them to go to Valhalla. Rick brings them back to life, with Bigfoot coming back as a clone of Summer.

They return to the Vatican, where the Pope easily defeats them again. This time, Rick brings back Bigfoot in a new body created just for him. They continue to fight the Pope, losing repeatedly, eventually recruiting Dracula, the Wolfman, Frankenstein’s Monster, and Gill-Man.

Rick decides that the only way to defeat the Pope is to remove his access to energy, so he provokes the Vikings before running to bring himself, Morty, and Bigfoot back to life, leaving the rest of the monsters to hold off the Vikings until they can revive themselves.

When they get to the Vatican, the Pope still has his powers until they suddenly disappear. Rick then uses the opportunity to catch the Pope in a Pokéball.

Later, Rick and Morty attempt to return Bigfoot to the wild. The educated Bigfoot, who now has a human body, does not want to return to the woods but reluctantly agrees to do so after Rick and Morty throw objects at him forlornly.

In a post-credits scene, Rick participates in a Pokémon battle with the Pope, but the battle is busted by the feds. The Pope asks the feds who the Pope is now, and it’s revealed that it’s the clone of Rick who had escaped.

“Mort: Ragnarick” is one of the more fun episodes of the recent run, with a high-concept premise that actually delivers on its potential. It’s a zany adventure with plenty of wild twists and turns and abundant enjoyable gags. Although it might not rank among the show’s best episodes, it’s much better than what we have been getting this season.

Rick and Morty airs on Adult Swim every Sunday at 11pm ET/PT.
