The final showdown in Avengers: Endgame was quite the spectacle seeing all the Avengers assemble to defeat Thanos, but one thing fans noticed was Doctor Strange’s bizarre role during the epic battle scene.

Benedict Cumberbatch brought Doctor Stephen Strange to life in 2016 and has since played the role in several MCU installments. Despite being a secondary character in the Avengers movies, his role is of crucial importance.

What Was Doctor Strange Doing During The Epic Battle In Avengers: Endgame?

While speaking with New Indian Express, actor Benedict Cumberbatch confessed he was still in awe at how far his MCU role has taken him and how massive Doctor Strange’s part has become in the Marvel realm.

I’m still surprised at how prominent he has become. I always knew there was amazing potential there because of all the aspects to the character, but I definitely had no idea that we would get to be at this point with the multiverse aspect when we started out.

Still, in the final battle in Avengers: Endgame, fans could not help but notice one small thing but speaks volumes about Doctor Strange. In the scene, the Sorcerer Supreme was holding off water so it would not flood the ground. One fan remarked, “They really had Doctor Strange one of the powerful Avengers just holding off water the entire fight in Endgame.”

Back in Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange courageously locked horns with the Mad Titan. The fan complained in the same thread, “Right after they had him go toe to toe with Thanos with four infinity stones in Infinity War.”

There’s definitely a reason why Doctor Strange was left holding off water in Endgame instead of blasting Thanos. One netizen replied, “He could have done a lot of things, but this was the only one where they won.”

Indeed, he saw 14 million possibilities on how they could defeat Thanos, and in this particular reality where he was holding off water, they were able to do so. Doctor Strange could have been showing off his mystical powers, but none of those fight scenes would end in victory.

The Russo Brothers Explain Doctor Strange’s 14 Million Possibilities

In an interview with The Russo Brothers via WIRED, they revealed that Doctor Strange has actually lived in the 14 million possibilities he claimed he saw in Avengers: Infinity War. It was only told that he traveled in those futures, but in reality, he actually lived and died in all of them.

Right before he dies he has to reset it, as we saw at the end of Doctor Strange, and do it again, and take copious notes each time he does it,” Joe Russo added. As exhausting as that sounds, it was the most incredible thing the character did in the entire saga.

This would support the argument above that he chose this particular possibility where he did the not-so-impressive thing of holding off water in order for them to defeat Thanos.
