The MCU family recently lost a shining star in the form of regular collaborator Ray Chan. Chan had worked on multiple films and series in the MCU as the supervising art director and production designer. Outside of the MCU, Chan reportedly worked as a supervising art director, production designer, and art director on films such as Knight and Day, Blood Diamond, National Treasure, and Children of Men. The art director reportedly also served as a production designer for the upcoming Marvel film Deadpool & Wolverine.

Ray Chan, the art director behind some of the best MCU films such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, has reportedly passed away. The official website of Marvel put out a statement regarding the news. While no reason was stated, the art director was reportedly survived by his wife and two children.

Chan reportedly began his tenure with the MCU as a supervising art director on Thor: The Dark World, after which he worked on several projects such as Doctor Strange and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He reportedly also served as a production designer for the Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Marvel Studios put out a statement on their website, with condolence messages from President Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito. It read,

“Ray was first and foremost a good friend to everyone at Marvel Studios. He was a talented collaborator who brought creativity and attention to detail to every frame of every movie he worked on, and who was able to bring out the best in each department he worked with. He was the nicest human being and was such a pleasure to work with, hugely generous, and the kind of person who could take the seed of an idea and turn it into something beautiful.”

The noted production designer and art director made an on-camera appearance on the Disney Plus documentary Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Ray Chan was instrumental in designing some of the most iconic locations in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From acting as a supervising art director for Thor: The Dark World, which saw locations such as Svartalfheim and Vanaheim, to designing the planet of Xandar and Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum, Chan has left an unerasable mark on the MCU.

The art director has also worked on successful films such as the post-apocalyptic drama Children of Men, the action film Knight and Day, and the adventure film National Treasure. Chan’s final work and legacy will reportedly be the upcoming Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer Deadpool & Wolverine, which releases in July (via IMDB).
