While a lot of famous personalities, including Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose Depp, have found themselves in some sort of controversies regarding nepotism, a few others have been spared. The latter list surely includes Robert Downey Jr., who even though was brought up with famous parents, has proven that the heights he has reached go beyond nepotism.

Nepotism has been quite the topic of discussion in the entertainment industry. Recently, though, artists are getting called out more than ever for the privileges they hold over other artists who made themselves who they are from scratch. Actors like George Clooney, Drew Barrymore, Gwyneth Paltrow, and so on are loved by everyone even though they too are nepo babies.

Robert Downey Jr. has also found himself in the limelight of nepotism as fans seem to have just realized that he had a few close connections with the entertainment industry. Downey is known for a plethora of iconic roles he has done in his career, including the obvious stardom of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, everyone has got to start somewhere, right?

After his theatre roles, Downey was seen as one of the new cast members of Saturday Night Live in 1985. He, along with a few others was eventually dropped from the show following negative reviews for the new cast’s comedic talents. It is quite intriguing to think about how Downey managed to bag the role, though. Well, whatever it was, it might’ve helped that Jim Downey, his uncle, was a writer for SNL.

Apart from that, his parents too had made a name for themselves in the industry. His mother, Elsie Downey, was a writer and an actress. Adding to that, we all know his father Robert Downey Sr. who was a filmmaker and an actor. It looks like Downey has gotten caught up in the growing uproar about nepotism in the industry as fans on Twitter are calling him out.

Do you think all of Downey’s success is because he had a mother, a father, and an uncle already in the industry? Or does he deserve to keep some credit to himself?

So while technically Downey is a nepo baby, it would be unfair to relate all his success to the family he was born in. The guy’s one of the greatest actors out there! Downey is a prime example of someone who has overcome challenges, that too extremely difficult challenges, and became one of the most successful and loved actors of the generation.

Even though he comes from a family that has a history in the entertainment industry, Downey has time and again proven why he deserves to get the credit for his work. After facing numerous struggles with substance abuse and some run-ins with the law, Downey managed to turn it around for himself and came back bigger and better. Despite being from a privileged background he has earned his place at the top of the charts and has proven why he is not a product of nepotism.
