While Robert Downey Jr.’s journey as the sardonic industrialist-turned-superhero may have come to a lamentable end, not all hope is lost. At least not for the astute London-based detective renowned for his logical prowess and brilliant skills.

That’s right, Downey Jr. may very well make a comeback as the world-famous detective, and his wife, Susan Downey Jr. most certainly has her fingers crossed for it.

Will Robert Downey Jr. Return As the Ingenious Detective?

Much like Iron Man – a character that continues to live in fans’ hearts to this very date – Arthur Conan Doyle’s eminent creation of Sherlock Holmes is inarguably one of a kind. And when someone as gifted as Robert Downey Jr. takes on the character, well, that’s one surefire way to leave an indelible mark on the audience.

15 years ago, Wrath of Man filmmaker Guy Ritchie introduced the world to the dynamic duo of Downey Jr.’s Sherlock and Jude Law’s Dr. Watson in not one but two spectacularly thrilling movies. Now, as Ritchie works to bring a young Sherlock in a prequel, Susan Downey Jr., in an interview with Screen Rant, was asked about a third potential Sherlock Holmes film.

While she didn’t have any concrete updates to satiate fans, she did admit wanting to see the Oppenheimer star and the Fantastic Beasts actor together in the $1 billion franchise again (via The Numbers).

“I mean, look, no, there’s no update, other than it’s still very much alive in our hearts. Every day we talk about, ‘What is the best next version of that?’ Because anytime I see Robert and Jude together, which fortunately, I do get to see a few times a year, we hang out, and I’m just like, ‘Can I get these guys back on screen together?’, it’s magic. There needs to be a really strong reason, it needs to be a great story, and we do have some things in the works.”

With the Gothika producer reassuring fans that they do indeed have “something in the works,” people can rest assured that there’s at least some hope to hold onto.

Although there’s still quite a long way to go before fans get a Sherlock Holmes 3, they’re certainly getting a teenage detective as he carves out his origin story.

Young Sherlock, which has already entered Prime Video for production, will be starring The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare star Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the titular detective with Ritchie at the helm of the forthcoming series (via Variety).
