The Russo Brothers surprised fans at the 2024 Comic-Con by bringing in the new big bad villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Doctor Doom. Fans have been wanting Victor von Doom to make his MCU debut since time immemorial and when Fantastic Four was announced, their demands just grew louder and louder. However, Marvel has taken it a step forward by bringing in Robert Downey Jr. to play the supervillain. Who would have thought?

Doctor Doom has a lot on his shoulders since he is replacing not only Kang the Conqueror but also the Mad Titan Thanos. However, the one thing that already differentiates Doom from Thanos is that unlike the latter, the former is not a true villain. Don’t get us wrong; while Doom has done some terrible things, he also helped save the multiverse, unlike Thanos who basically wiped half of it away.

Is Doctor Doom Better Than Thanos?

Josh Brolin’s Thanos left the Avengers in utter chaos as they scattered around to save the universe from the supervillain’s twisted plan. With his “snap,” he was ready to eliminate half of the universe away in a sick plan to bring balance. On the other hand, the new supervillain of the MCU is a little different.

In the 2015 comic book, Secret Wars, avid readers got to experience something called the incursions which basically was a phenomenon created by the Beyonders where different Earths from the multiverse bumped into each other, causing their destruction. This meant the ultimate end of the multiverse.

Two iterations of Mr. Fantastic tried to save as much of humanity as possible by building rafts but Doom was one step ahead. He stole the power of the Beyonders and created his own “Battleworld” from the scraps of the destroyed multiverse.

Empowered by Molecule Man, Doom evolves into God Emperor Doom and he continues to rule the Battleworld for eight years. During his time as the ruler, he sure does some messed up things like twisting the memories of the residents so they don’t remember their old lives, exiling Johnny Storm and turning him into the sun, and so on.

Thus, while Doctor/God Emperor Doom is penned down to be a villain, at least he saved the multiverse from reaching its ultimate end.

Surrounded by clones of Doctor Doom on the stage of Hall H, the main version of the villain steps out from the crowd dressed in all green. He proceeds to take off his mask and the crowd. goes. wild. Robert Downey Jr. is back! The actor will be coming back to the MCU in Avengers 5 which has now been renamed to Avengers: Doomsday from Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Before the reveal, the Russo Brothers, who will be directing the upcoming Avengers 5 and 6, stated that since Doom is a complex character, only the greatest actor in the world could do him justice on screen.

Joe Russo said, (Via THR),

If we’re going to bring Victor Von Doom to the screen — he is one of the more complex characters in all of comics … this is potentially one of the more entertaining characters in all of fiction. If we’re going to do this … then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world. As proof of the unimaginable possibilities of the Marvel Universe, we give you the one person who could play Victor von Doom…

Needless to say, the greatest actor in question is none other than Downey Jr. and we couldn’t be more sold on this idea! RDJ played Iron Man for about ten years before the character met his end. Now we just have to wait until 2026 to find out how the actor rebrands himself in the superhero universe.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theatres on May 01, 2026.
