And with the Secret Wars being a part of the MCU’s future lineup, fans are convinced that Downey Jr’s Iron Man will make his comeback in the upcoming Avengers film.
Recently an insider has also claimed that the Dolittle star would come back in Secret Wars. The insider also shared that he could possibly feature in Don Cheadle’s Armor Wars.
Robert Downey Jr. Rumored to Return in Avengers: Secret Wars
The existence of the multiverse in the MCU has thrown up all kinds of possibilities for Robert Downey Jr. to return as Iron Man. The actor was last seen in Avengers: Endgame, where he made the ultimate sacrifice to defeat Thanos.
Fans are looking forward to the return of their favorite superhero in the upcoming phases of the MCU, which are expected to dig deeper into the multiverse. Rumors also had that the superhero would have a cameo in the upcoming film, Armor Wars.
A Twitter user @MyTimeToShineH has claimed that Robert Downey Jr. is expected to return in Avengers: Secret Wars. The user also claimed that he could also feature in the Armor Wars, which is expected to release in 2024.
Rumors about the Due Date star’s cameo or a brief appearance in Armor Wars have been going around for a while now. The film will follow Don Cheadle’s character James Rhodes. Considering his relationship with Tony Stark in the MCU, fans are expecting to see the Sherlock Holmes star in a flashback sequence with his best friend.
There are also rumors that the film could feature a pre-recorded message from Tony Stark, similar to the one shown at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Some rumors also claim that the studio is planning to bring back former Marvel actors to play variants of their MCU characters.
It is believed that Robert Downey Jr. could return to the MCU, under this plan with the 2026 film, Secret Wars. However, the return is believed to be a cameo only, and the character may not have a future in the MCU followed by Secret Wars. And not every Marvel fan is in favor of having simply a cameo of their favorite superhero.
Fans Don’t Want the Studio to Ruin Iron Man’s Sacrifice
Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man is one of the most iconic MCU characters. The superhero has been in the MCU since he was introduced in the 2008 film. And after protecting the MCU for more than a decade the character got what fans considered the ‘perfect ending‘ in Endgame.
Who cares about a cameo. Make it meaningful or don’t do it. If you’re gonna “cheapen” the Endgame sacrifice then you at least have to make it worth it. If we don’t get something great from it then it’s just a net loss.

Terrible idea. Means there are no consequences for actions in the mcu. Possibly just kill him like they did the cameos in multi verse of madness. And writing is going to shit. They could use Arno instead of Tony and have it be a new actor.

So, the rumors about his comeback are not pleasant for everyone. Some fans are saying that the character had the perfect ending, then why everyone wants his comeback? They are claiming that his cameo in Armor Wars could make sense if it is as an AI or in a flashback sequence.
But having just a cameo in Secret Wars will “cheapen the Endgame sacrifice.” Fans are also claiming that if they planned to bring back the character so soon, killing him in Endgame was a poor decision. They are also asking people to stop making such requests.
Avengers: Secret Wars is set to release on 1 May 2026.
