Robert Pattinson Was Given An Ultimatum During Twilight Audition

One of the main reasons for the huge success of the Twilight Saga was the on-screen chemistry between the two protagonists played by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Catherine Hardwicke who directed the first film of the series, looked back on the audition tapes in which a 17-year-old Stewart and a 21-year-old Pattinson performed a kissing scene together.

Straight off the bat, Hardwicke could see the sparks flying between the two actors. While the filmmaker was heartened to note that she had found the right stars for roles, she was also wary of Stewart and Pattinson not getting into a physically intimate relationship in real life, with the Snow White and the Huntsman star being only 17 at the time.

Feeling that it was her responsibility to ensure that this didn’t happen especially with the audition taking place in her house, Hardwicke issued Pattinson an ultimatum. Speaking to Josh Horowitz in the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she said,

“I could tell when they were doing the biology scene at my kitchen table, I saw like, sparks flying so much, I’m like ‘Rob, I don’t know if you know in the US, 17 is underage’, and they were liked shocked. There was a lot of blushing”

Hardwicke’s prediction went on to ring true, as Pattinson and Stewart’s on-screen chemistry flourished off-screen as well. The relationship though, ended with a lot of controversy.

Despite breaking through into Hollywood thanks to his Twilight gig, Pattinson has admitted in many interviews on different occasions, that he was not a fan of the films, and even believed that they did not deserve to be as successful as they were. The Devil All the Time star though, had to eat humble pie after seeing the runaway success of the franchise and confessed that his hate towards the films was unwarranted. In an interview with USA Today, the celebrity spoke of what made the film tick for the next generation as well.

“It seems like with younger people in their late teens, early 20s, it’s sort of become quite a hip thing to like. It’s a fascinating second wave of people appreciating it, which is kind of cool. I think when anything becomes a massive phenomenon, there’s always people who get annoyed because it’s just everywhere. But now it seems like a retro thing: the soundtrack, the fashion. It’s like, ‘Oh, that’s so late 2000s.’ ”

The actor also revealed that the soundtrack of the films was much ahead of their time, and would continue to impress different generations of viewers in the future as well.
