Bong Joon-ho, popularly known for his critically acclaimed movie Parasite, which won Best Picture at the 92nd Academy Awards, made headlines for his upcoming project Mickey 17. Said to feature Robert Pattinson and other stellar cast, the upcoming movie was originally scheduled for a March 29, 2024, release. But unfortunately, it got delayed due to the Hollywood strikes.
Currently, Bong Joon-ho and Robert Pattinson are again making headlines, as the duo are said to have the release date set for their highly anticipated project Mickey 17. According to reports, the film is set to feature Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, alongside Pattison, which is now rescheduled to release in 2025.
Bong Joon-ho and Robert Pattinson’s Upcoming Mickey 17
Following Bong Joon-ho’s first critically acclaimed film Parasite, that got hailed at the 92nd Academy Awards, under the Best Picture category, the director was all set for his brand new project Mickey 17. Adapted from author Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey 7, the film was expected to have Joon-ho put his trademark spin on the source material.
Featuring uber-popular Robert Pattinson, alongside Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, the film was said to be about darker science-fiction elements. The logline of the movie narrated the story of an “expendable” human employee named Mickey Barnes, who was offered the task of colonizing an ice planet.
Meanwhile, the movie was set to experiment with the concept of multiple iterations of Mickey dying and new bodies needing to be generated. Unfortunately, despite everything being set for production, Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated movie faced the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Therefore, although Robert Pattinson’s movie was set to release in 2024, it got delayed.
After Delayed Release, Mickey 17 is Now Rescheduled for 2025
According to updates from The Hollywood Reporter, it has been stated that Mickey 17 was originally scheduled to be released on March 29, 2024. However, due to production delays caused by the Hollywood strikes, Bong Joon-ho and Robert Pattinson’s upcoming highly anticipated movie faced the unfortunate event of rescheduling.
Now, after Warner Bros. Pictures removed the film from its previous date of March 2024 release, Mickey 17 has now received a new theatrical calendar. As per reports, Warner Bros. has now confirmed the film to open on Jan. 31, 2025, and also be available in IMAX theaters. While the movie previously faced delays and struggles due to the strikes, it now seems to be a good thing.
With Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two featuring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, releasing on March 1, Bong Joon-ho and Robert Pattinson’s Mickey 17 would have majorly struggled at the box office. Although both films are sci-fi spectacles adapted from novels, Mickey 17 does not have the same place in pop culture as Dune.
Therefore, it seems Robert Pattinson’s movie might have struggled to stand out and attract general audiences if released in 2024. With the release date rescheduled to 2025, Mickey 17 now appears to have a better chance.
