While the entire show led up to Ted finding the titular mother, the series finale did away with the mother quickly before making him return to Robin.

The makers also disappointed fans by chronicling Barney and Robin’s wedding for the entire ninth season before revealing in the final episode that they did not work out. However, Smulders reportedly had another pitch during the wedding sequence, which probably would have ended their marriage sooner.

The season also saw a cameo from Smulders’ husband and comedian Taran Killam, who played Gary Blauman. The two even shared a scene in the episode The End of the Aisle. However, Cobie Smulders reportedly had a different pitch for their debut on screen. She said to CBS Sunday Morning,

I was pitching something like Robin just grabs him and makes out with him. But they didn’t go for it.

Killam had made appearances in the show on multiple occasions as Blauman, making his first appearance a few years before the two got married in 2009.

One of the biggest upsets in TV history has to be the series finale of How I Met Your Mother. After nine seasons of build-up about the mother and her identity, the show finished key moments between Ted Mosby and Tracy McConnell in a montage that revealed that she died of an unknown illness.

While most fans were disappointed with the ending, Cobie Smulders reportedly found it perfect and she even got emotional after hearing it. She mentioned to IGN at the time that she approached the creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays and asked them,

I went up to Craig [Thomas] after the table read, and I was like, ‘What is the deal with this?’ He was like, ‘Well, do you want me to tell you?’ I was like, ‘Yeah! I think I want to know,’ and he just laid it out. I immediately started weeping and had to leave. Like, I had to leave. I said that. I was like, ‘Craig, I have to leave right now. Thank you,’ and I just walked away.

Smulders also mentioned that it was an effective ending and was true to life.
