Renowned for his unparalleled talent on screen, the late actor Robin Williams remains a cherished icon in the realm of entertainment. Despite bringing boundless laughter to audiences worldwide, Williams’ off-screen life was marked by complexities, including multiple divorces, notably his enduring marriage to Marsha Garces.
Following Williams’ tragic passing in 2014, Garces made the surprising choice to auction off a selection of his most cherished belongings.
Robin Williams’ Second Marriage to Marsha Garces
Robin Williams was married three times and his first two marriages to Valerie Velardi and Marsha Garces ended in divorce. His third marriage was to the graphic designer, Susan Schneider, whom he married in 2011. However, it was his second marriage to Marsha Garces that faced significant scrutiny.
Their relationship stirred controversy due to its origins, with Williams allegedly having an affair with Garces while still married to his first wife, Valerie Velardi. While Velardi has denied such claims, many rumors have stated otherwise.
Williams and Garces got married in 1989 while she was pregnant with their first child. The couple was together for two decades and welcomed two children together, Zelda and Cody. However, his longest marriage came to an end after Garces filed for a divorce in 2008.
The divorce, which was finalized in 2010, settlement was notably costly for Williams, who was reportedly required to pay out millions to his ex-wife. Garces additionally retained some of Williams’ cherished possessions, including his Hollywood Walk of Fame star, after he passed away. However, she reportedly decided to auction off these memorabilia.
Marsha Garces Auctioned Off Robin Williams’ Belongings
Four years after Robin Williams passed away, Marsha Garces decided to auction his belongings and personal possessions under the “Creating a Stage: The Collection of Marsha and Robin Williams” auction at Sotheby’s in 2018.
In an announcement of the auction, Sotheby’s noted that a collection belonging to the late actor Robin Williams and his wife of more than two decades, Marsha Garces, “will be part of a dedicated auction in New York on 4 October 2018,” as per the Daily Mail.
The auction reportedly included his Walk of Fame star, which was expected to be sold for up to $5000 along with furniture pieces, books, and scripts signed by the actor. It also consisted of 40 watches from the Jumanji star’s personal collection along with memorabilia collected by the couple throughout their lives and careers.
Other notable items included a Frank Muller watch, a robe worn by Daniel Radcliffe on the set of Harry Potter a franchise Williams was eager to star in, and a wooden sculpture of a horse by artist Deborah Butterfield among other items, which were expected to command high prices.
While the late actor’s belongings were also auctioned off, it is worth noting that the proceeds did not go to Marsha Garces, as they were donated to organizations and charities supported by both Garces and Williams.
