Tom Cruise spoke in the past about taking things to the next level as he Cruise wanted to hop on a SpaceX rocket, travel to the International Space Station, and shoot a full movie as he orbits around the Earth. While the thought of it does sound appealing but spending a fortune to only shoot a movie sounded a little too much for people.

However, when it came to execution Tom Cruise was left behind as a Russian production team shot a part of their movie in space. Named The Challenge, this new sci-fi motion picture made history by being the first fiction film to shoot some footage in space using actual actors and an actual director. As the movie shows some of this historic footage in the first trailer recently released, we can be amazed by how far mankind can go, beyond boundaries.

A Russian film crew, comprising actress Yulia Peresild, the director of the movie Klim Shipenko, went on to the ISS and after having shot some footage, they returned to Earth on October 17, 2021, aboard a Soyuz MS-18 manned spacecraft, after spending 12 days in space. The footage shot in space makes up around 35 minutes of the final film. The Challenge will portray a doctor who had to go to space to save a cosmonaut’s life. The movie will showcase the training received by the doctor before going to space and the challenges faced by the woman doctor while treating the cosmonaut in the environment of the orbital outpost.

What This Means for Tom Cruise’s Next Challenge

As the Russian movie has already done the impossible, it is interesting to see whether Tom Cruise remains inclined toward his wish to fly aboard the ISS. The actor has also put forward his desire to be the first person to spacewalk, something even the cast and crew of The Challenge didn’t try to execute. Having said that, it’s never a good idea to underestimate Tom Cruise, an actor, and producer who specializes in going against the odds, an actor takes all the things mere mortals like us think are impossible only to perfect them effortlessly in astounding feats of action. He has done it before and he did it again this year by launching Top Gun: Maverick to blockbuster status.

But on the other hand, even Tom Cruise has his limits, and flying into space for the sake of Hollywood magic might be one step too far. But now that The Challenge has gone there, Cruise will undoubtedly not hold back on his desire as he feels motivated, more than ever to execute his long-awaited plan.

The Challenge releases on April 12 2023 while Top Gun: Maverick is currently streaming on Apple TV.
