Amidst all the pink cotton candy entertainment and fame, a legal battle between the iconic band Aqua and toy giant Mattel has taken center stage, casting a shadow over the much-anticipated Barbie. The dispute traces back to 1997 when Mattel filed a lawsuit against Aqua over their infectious hit, Barbie Girl. The song, which playfully explored Barbie’s fictional world, became an instant sensation but also caught the attention of Mattel, known for its meticulous image control.

Fast forward to the present, as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie is set to make waves in Hollywood, one couldn’t help but notice the absence of Aqua’s signature track from the film. Speculation arose that the legal dispute between Aqua and Mattel played a role in the decision to exclude Barbie Girl from the live-action adaptation. Instead, the film opted for a revamped version, as Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice sampled elements from the original Barbie song, creating their own rendition for the movie.

“I was like, ‘Greta, how are we going to incorporate this song? We can’t do a Barbie movie and not have a nod to Aqua’s Barbie Girl,” she recounted. “It has to be in there.”

And with a smile, she emphasized:

“And [Greta] was like, ‘Don’t worry, we’re going to find a cool way to incorporate it,'” she continued. “And then, when she was like, ‘Guess who’s going to do the remix of Aqua’s Barbie Girl? Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice.’ I was like, ‘Together? Are you joking?!’ I just knew immediately that all my girlfriends were going to lose their minds.”

In an unexpected twist, Aqua’s ongoing feud with Mattel seemed to spill over into other facets of the film’s production. Reports surfaced that the band’s frontman, in a humorous yet biting tone, took aim at the movie’s leading man, Ryan Gosling, suggesting that he wasn’t good enough for their song, saying:

“We should say we turned it down. Ryan Gosling is not good enough!”

The roast generated a mix of reactions, with some viewing it as a playful jab while others considered it a reflection of Aqua’s strong stance against the toy company. But gossip has it that eventually, the legal battle settled down, leaving a lasting impact on their relationship. The air between them was still thick with tension, with everyone wondering what went on behind closed doors. It’s a tale of music, toys, and corporate clashes that had the whole town buzzing. Even though the feud may have quieted, you just know there’s still some shade being thrown from both sides. Hollywood feuds are always full of surprises, and this one was no exception.
