Ryan Reynolds celebrated for his portrayal of the irreverent Deadpool, has taken an adamant stance when it comes to shielding his children from the character’s unconventional persona. The Hollywood star chose to keep his family far from the $1.5 billion grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, fearing that the sight of him as the foul-mouthed, spandex-clad anti-hero could be unsettling for their sensibilities.

Why does Ryan Reynolds not want his family on the sets of Deadpool 2?

In an insightful 2018 interview with ABC News, Ryan Reynolds candidly discussed how donning the Deadpool persona allows him to embrace a level of freedom in his acting, a departure from his real-life persona around his family. He acknowledged the duality of the character, sharing,

“It’s sort of like a second skin … Of course, it can be uncomfortable. But I feel sort of free in it like I can kind of say and do anything with impunity.”

However, what drove Reynolds’ decision to exclude his children from the set was his desire to maintain a clear distinction between his on-screen alter ego and his role as a father. He didn’t want them to witness the process of him transforming into the character, complete with the makeup that gives Deadpool his distinctive facial scars. Instead, he preferred to leave home as their familiar father and return unchanged after work.

This parental vigilance extended to the point where he adamantly expressed that his children will likely never watch a Deadpool movie as long as he has a say in the matter.

Nevertheless, he emphasized the separation between his portrayal and his family’s exposure to it. While talking about Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Reynolds stated,

“I am very lucky to be a part of a movie that isn’t just like …it’s a movie that my wife (Blake Lively) wants to see and my kids want to see and I don’t take that for granted for a second. ‘Cause they will never see Deadpool.”

While Reynolds allowed his children to visit the set of the first Deadpool film, he has done so with strict guidelines. Notably, they have never witnessed him in the scar makeup that defines his character’s appearance. Reynolds admitted his concern that exposing them to his scarred alter ego might leave a lasting impact, leading them to seek therapy in the future. “Just keep them away from the set when I’m in the scar makeup,” he humorously added.
