Nintendo has recently announced SaGa Emerald Beyond, and the release date on the Nintendo Switch is confirmed to be April 25th, 2024. The title will also be released on other platforms such as Android, iOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows.
SaGa Emerald Beyond is Square Enix’s latest entry in the SaGa series of fantasy role-playing video games. The announcement was made during the SaGa Glimmerfest 2023 Livestream, which can be accessed here. This year’s Glimmerfest stream also marked the publisher’s 35th anniversary.
The game was initially announced in September 2023, during a Nintendo Direct Broadcast for the Switch, and other platforms for the title were announced subsequently. The Final Fantasy series is the parent to the franchise, and the former very different compared to the latter. The latter has non-linear storytelling, non-linear character development, and non-linear exploration.
Saga Emerald Beyond: Two New Characters Introduced
The same stream that announced the release date for the title also revealed two new characters: Tsunanori Mido and Ameya Aisling. Each of the characters got new and separate character trailers for themselves.
The character description from Mido’s trailer tells us about his objectives, abilities, and family heritage. It states that:
Tsunanori comes from the long lineage of the important Mido family of Miyako City, a world filled with traditional, old-fashioned city streets that sprawl out from the central Gokakudo Temple. He can control kugutsu, or animated puppets, which bear their own will.
The description continues and gives some background on Miyako City. It is described as:
The last great war destroyed the old societal and spiritual orders alike. Ever since, Miyako City has been plagued with all kinds of supernatural phenomena. Tsunanori is selected for the Cathedral Project to investigate other worlds and restore order to the spiritual realm.
From the description and the trailer, the kugutsu, or the puppets, will play a significant role in the character. The trailer also showcases the same as we see Mido engaging in combat and using the kugutsu, and some hints about his journey to reclaim spiritual energy are also discussed. The trailer also showcases how the traversal mechanics will look and how the in-game puzzles will work.
The other character revealed is Aisling, who also has a trailer. The trailer reveals that Ameya is a budding witch from the Witchdom Pulchra, a world ruled by witchers.
She comes to Miyako City to pass her witch trials, called witchterms, to gain status and truly embrace her destiny as a witch. Ameya Aisling is shown hiding her identity as a schoolgirl, and the character description for Aisling in the trailer reads:
While in Miyako City, she assumes the identity of an 11-year-old schoolgirl named Yumeha Izumi and lives with her cat familiar, LoLo. But after being attacked by an unknown man, she loses her magic powers completely.
The character description makes it abundantly clear that Ameya Aisling will be on a quest to reclaim her powers. She and her furry feline friend, LoLo, set out on a journey to obtain mana and become a qualified witch.
Both Aisling and Mido can see Emerald Waves, which guide them in their journey. The title has five playable characters. Each choice the player makes and each action leads to a different branch in the story. As per the game’s official website, every character has various endings that can be unlocked. The game looks promising and should be tried if one enjoys RPG titles.
