Sam Rockwell was fired from Demi Moore’s G.I. Jane
Rockwell was offered an undisclosed role in Ridley Scott’s action drama film G.I. Jane. However, the star was fired from the film at the last minute. The film included Demi Moore as lead, along with Viggo Mortensen and Anne Bancroft.
Sam Rockwell, mostly known for independent movies and plays, could not become part of the film as he refused to scuba dive in the middle of the night. He shared,
“I gave them no alternative because I didn’t want to learn how to scuba dive. I wouldn’t mind learning in the Bahamas, but I didn’t want to learn at three o’clock in the morning.”
The actor shared in conversation with L.A. Times,
“I recently got fired from ‘G.I. Jane.’ Actually, I kinda quit because they wanted me to scuba dive which wasn’t in my contract, and I refused. I wanted to do the picture, too, because I’d love to work with Ridley Scott [the director of “G.I. Jane”], and I’d already been through the two-week Navy Seals boot camp. All the actors had to do it, including Demi Moore.”
He also appreciated actress Demi Moore for showing support as a team,
“She was real sweet. She took us to a local strip joint where we got our heads shaved and drank tequila. That was fun–generally, though, I’m not sure I like making movies.”
The film was a box office bomb and grossed $48 million on a $50 million budget.
Sam Rockwell is more inclined towards theatre than movies
Rockwell is a member of the New York-based Latino theater group Labrynth. He isn’t a Latino, but Labrynth made an exception for him, as he showed up to read opposite his friend and Cuban actor, Yul Vazquez, who had auditioned to join the theatre. Mr. Right actor shared that he feels actual acting happens on the stage.
The star shared,
“Film is hard, largely because it’s so tedious, and I’d almost rather do theatre. The stage is where it really happens for an actor because it makes full use of whatever you have to give.”
Rockwell also shared that he didn’t like the taste of fame which is part and parcel of being a star. He said,
“Fame seems scary to me because it’s out of your control. The little taste I’ve had of it–I occasionally get recognized for a Miller Lite commercial I did in 1992–has been pretty weird.”
Sam Rockwell will be next seen alongside Henry Cavill in Argylle, releasing on 2 February 2024.
G.I. Jane is available for streaming on Paramount+.
