Dennis Villenueve’s “Dune: Part Two” is ruling fans over its intricate world-building, complex characters, and exploration of themes of politics, religion, and ecology. Set in a distant future on the desert planet Arrakis, the story follows Paul Atreides, the son of Duke Leto Atreides, who is entrusted with stewardship of the planet’s most valuable resource, spice.

Atreides inherits a destiny far grander than he could have imagined. Across the cinematic landscape lies another story of inheritance. Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” delves into the Corleone family, a powerful Mafia clan led by the aging patriarch, Vito Corleone. Some striking similarities between the two characters surfaced online, throwing fans into a frenzy.

An X user recently took to the app to share some thought-provoking comparisons between Paul Atreides from Dune and Michael Corleone from The Godfather. He quoted “Same Tragedy. Think About It”.

Fans were quick enough to join the cues and realize that their stories are actually pretty similar. While of course the universe and the stakes are vastly different, the path they follow is almost the same. Both Atreides and the Corleone face the burden of legacy, thrust into worlds where power is a dangerous game with deadly consequences.

However, both of them are reluctant to assume their destiny, distancing themselves from their inheritance in the beginning. They both are forced to embrace their bloodline after the demise of their father. Despite being borderline psychopaths, both are considered to be messiahs by their people and want nothing but revenge. Zendaya‘s Chani was the love interest of Atreides and wanted him to stay away from the dangerous path, just like Corlone’s wife Kay Adams.

Al Pacino has been immortalized in history, thanks to his character in The Godfather. Is it reasonable to expect the same for Timothee Chalamet for his portrayal of Paul Atreides?

Dune: Part Two was released worldwide on March 1st, 2024, and is earning praise from fans of all ages. The only question fans now have is whether it will have a third installment. The simple answer is yes, there will be, but there’s more to excite fans.

First of all, a prequel spin-off series Dune: Prophecy is in works under the vision of Diane Ademu-John. It is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max in late 2024. Speaking of Part Three, the director Dennis Villeneuve spoke to EMPIRE that it will be the last movie of the series, making it a trilogy.

In another interview with The Times, Villeneuve revealed “There is absolutely a desire to have a third one, but I don’t want to rush it. The danger in Hollywood is that people get excited and only think about release dates, not quality.”

Dune: Part Three is a dream that has a very high chance of materializing. Until then fans can enjoy the previous two parts. Dune: Part Two is currently streaming in theatres.
