The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report that Argentina, 1985 was the reason Victoria Alonso was fired by Disney. The Oscar-nominated passion project of Alonso’s was distributed by Disney’s direct competitor Amazon. The film was also contesting for Best International Picture at the Academy Awards.

Alonso was a crucial part of the holy trinity at Marvel Studios along with boss Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito. After getting herself involved in the Amazon distributed project she allegedly breached many contracts even after multiple warnings.

An insider reports to THR that Alonso signed a contract in 2018 with Disney which clearly states that she cannot work with competing studios. Alonso did not abide by that too and was ultimately let go.

Patty Glaser released a statement countering these allegations and presenting Victoria Alonso’s side of things. Glaser emphasized how ridiculous it is on Disney’s part to run a narrative that a 17-year-old employee and VFX President were fired over some passion project.

“The idea that Victoria was fired over a handful of press interviews relating to a personal passion project about human rights and democracy that was nominated for an Oscar and which she got Disney’s blessing to work on is ridiculous.”

Glaser bought attention to some ideological differences between Alonso and Disney heads. Alonso was a Lesbian, Latina woman who promoted inclusion and was planning on making Marvel films more representational of queer characters. She said,

“Victoria, a gay Latina who had the courage to criticize Disney, was silenced. Then she was terminated when she refused to do something she believed was reprehensible. Disney and Marvel made a really poor decision that will have serious consequences. There is a lot more to this story and Victoria will be telling it shortly—in one forum or another.”

A Disney spokesperson responded to the above statements made by Victoria Alonso’s Attorney Patty Glaser.

“Unfortunately, Victoria is sharing a narrative that leaves out several key factors concerning her departure, including an indisputable breach of contract and a direct violation of company policy. We will continue to wish her the best for the future and thank her for her numerous contributions to the studio.”

Despite the polite demeanor, there is a lot of bad blood between Disney and Victoria Alonso. As of now, reports suggest that Alonso and Disney are in settlement negotiations. This is a result of Alonso’s strong front, and suing Disney for wrongful termination. Twitter broke over this news as many saw this coming.
