In 2015, pioneering animation studio Pixar once again gave audiences something that’s never been seen before through Inside Out. The film that dealt with the inner workings of a young 11-year-old girl’s mind, was unique in the way feelings and emotions were given tangible qualities and became actual characters in the narrative.
Nine years later, Pixar is back with a sequel to the popular blockbuster, which will be one of the anticipated films of the summer. Apart from a fresh personification of emotions, the film has interestingly taken inspiration from Adam Sandler’s Uncut Gems as far as certain technical aspects are concerned. This information though, is throwing fans into a confused state regarding what to expect.
This Adam Sandler Film Inspired Inside Out 2
Pixar’s Inside Out is a heartwarming story about 11-year-old Riley who learns to embrace and adapt to change through the help of her emotions which come alive as characters in the film. This novel approach to a narrative worked wonders with audiences and critics and proved once again why the animation studio was a pioneer in the field.
After a hiatus of 9 years, fans will get to finally witness a sequel which will release in theaters in June 2024. According to an article by Polygon, the narrative will see Riley as a high school teenager who is faced with a fresh set of challenges that are brought forth by four brand new emotions including Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment.
More significantly, the film was also created by a predominantly female crew, led by story artist Rebecca McVeigh who revealed that the team did extensive research into the mindset of teenagers to ensure that all these sentiments were depicted as organically as possible.
Another surprising bit of information is the fact that the film has taken inspiration from Adam Sandler’s crime thriller Uncut Gems, directed by the Safdie brothers, when it came to camera work and other technical aspects, especially with regard to the emotion of Anxiety.
For this emotion, director of photography Adam Habib used a specific technique that involved close-up camera angles that were used quite prominently to convey intense emotions in Sandler’s film. This included using the hand-held camera extensively, incorporating wide angle lenses, and changing up the focus of the objects in question.
In addition, director Kelsey Mann and the animation team created static sets with virtual cameras that would move around to capture digital characters in front of them. This was another technique used in Uncut Gems to amplify emotions through alternative angles.
Why Are Fans Apprehensive About Inside Out 2?
Adam Sandler’s 2019 crime drama Uncut Gems saw the actor in a very different avatar as a jeweler and gambling addict who must undertake a heist to pay off his debts. Apart from the star’s impressive performance, the film’s visual and technical aspects orchestrated by the Safdie brothers were also major highlights.
Interestingly, Pixar’s much awaited sequel Inside Out 2 has taken inspiration from Uncut Gems in the way the various emotions have been visualized and presented. While these predominantly deal with the creative and technical parts of the film, it has caused netizens to speculate on social media about what kind of a narrative Pixar is aiming at.
Considering the fact that Sandler’s film is a crime drama, a few viewers wondered if the animated sequel could also have dark shades. While some fans are unsure of how this will pan out, others are worried about the central character Riley and her predicament in the film, which they hope would not end in tragedy.
