Ever since its inception, the DC Universe has been known for introducing iconic superheroes and supervillains. Previously DC delivered a supervillain film, Suicide Squad, which became a blockbuster hit. However, the film failed to impress the critics and received negative reviews.
Despite that, the performances of the actors were appreciated. Among them was Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn who became one of the most celebrated characters in DCU. Interestingly, Robbie wasn’t the choice for the character, as Emma Roberts was considered for the role of Harley Quinn but she turned down the role.
Emma Roberts turned down the iconic supervillain role in DC film
Emma Roberts is a celebrated actress known for her work in the thriller and horror genre. Considering her work throughout her career, it is no surprise that she was the first choice for the renowned DC character Harley Quinn. However, due to a scheduling conflict, she rejected the offer and starred in a satirical horror series Scream Queens.
The role eventually went to Margot Robbie, who undoubtedly excelled in it. Now when we look back, it’s indeed hard to imagine any other in Harley Quinn’s role. Robbie played the character in three films: 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey, and 2021 The Suicide Squad.
Previously, during an interview with EW Robbie claimed that she wants to take a break from the iconic character. She said,
“It was kind of back-to-back filming Birds… and filming this, so I was kind of like, oof, I need a break from Harley because she’s exhausting. I don’t know when we’re next going to see her. I’m just as intrigued as everyone else is.”
Before Robbie’s live-action portrayal of Harley Quinn, the character was brought to life in the animated series by Kaley Cuoco.
Who will be the next Harley Quinn?
After the impeccable portrayal of Harley Quinn by Margot Robbie and Kaley Cuoco, the role will be reprised by singer Lady Gaga. Since the role of Quinn has been put to a halt by Robbie, it was reported that Lady Gaga will take over the iconic role in the upcoming Joker sequel, Folie à Deux. During a conversation with MTV News, Robbie shared her thoughts on Gaga’s casting. She said,
“It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor. It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing. I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”
The film will reportedly be a musical featuring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role.
