The Sonic animated series is inspired by the video game of the same name. The first film in the franchise follows the tale of Sonic (an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog), who battles the evil Doctor Eggman (a mad scientist).
There are a total of 8 colored Sonics in the game—Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Cyan, Purple, White, and Black. The black hedgehog, known as Shadow, serves as the main anti-hero, unlike other colored Sonics. He undoubtedly has good intentions, but he’s not afraid to stir up chaos to accomplish his goals, which makes him evil.
In the wacky world of Sonic, Shadow the Hedgehog was created by Professor Gerald Robotnik through genetic engineering to cure his granddaughter Maria’s deadly ailment. It looks like he is now set to take the main spotlight, as Paramount plans a spin-off movie solely based on him.
Will There Be a Movie Based on Shadow the Hedgehog?
The new Sonic movie is cooking, and guess who’s stealing the limelight this time? Shadow—the black-furrere mobian hedgehog with red eyes and black nose. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now in production, and a sneak peek of Shadow is out.
In a recent social media post from the movie’s official account, they dropped the first look at Shadow’s stylish appearance. The X post reads, “Off and Running.”

Shadow made a grand entrance in the post-credit scene of Sonic The Hedgehog 2, where he was hinted at as Sonic’s newest antagonist.
There’s another scoop: a solo spinoff film based on Shadow. Rumors has it that Paramount is looking forward to making a Shadow the Hedgehog Prequel (via Screen Rant). Maybe Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will set up his story for the spin-off, exploring plenty of his story.
Shadow the Hedgehog is arguably the second biggest character, only behind Sonic, so there are chances that a Shadow prequel will be set before the events of the first film. This raises another anticipated question: Will Jim Carrey be in it?
Jim Carrey May Appear in Sonic‘s Spin-off Despite Retirement
Sonic the Hedgehog, an action comedy film based on Sega’s video game franchise, is directed by Jeff Fowler. Ben Schwartz voices Sonic, with a stellar cast including James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Lee Majdoub, Neal McDonough, and Jim Carrey as the eccentric Dr. Robotnik.
The third film might retain the same cast and crew members, but it’s yet to be confirmed. Even though Carrey announced retirement from acting following his role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, leaked storyboards for Sonic 3 suggest Carrey may reprise his role as Doctor Eggman (via The Gamer).
So, we might see Ace Ventura star in the upcoming Shadow adaptation, too. Carrey was cast as Dr. Robotnik, the main baddie from the Sonic video game, in June 2018.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be hitting theaters on December 20, 2024.
