Shanks is one of the most popular characters in One Piece. He is like a father figure to Monkey D. Luffy, and this inspired him to become a pirate. But Shanks has always stayed in the shadows, and even after 1000 episodes, his true intentions are not clear. After Shanks met the Gorosei, it was theorized that he was the actual villain in One Piece, but a new fan theory debunks it and claims Shanks to have a lot of depth in his character.

The theory claims that Gol D. Roger had asked all his crew members to wait for Joyboy and feed the Gomu Gomu no Mi to him. So, Shanks stole the Devil Fruit and was on the lookout for Joyboy. But as fate has it, the fruit chose Monkey D. Luffy. In the beginning, Shanks was upset and angry with Luffy, but something changed, and he even decided to sacrifice his arm for young Monkey D. Luffy.

It was not until Joyboy finally woke up that Shanks decided it was time for him to claim the One Piece. Being a Yonko, he has one of the Road Poneglyphs and sees all the others while he is a member of the Roger Pirates. It may be possible that he was acting as a gatekeeper of Laughtale until that point since no one could get to Laughtale without all the Road Poneglyphs. But now that Joyboy was here, there was no need for him to be a gatekeeper.

The fan theory also leaves space for a situation where Gol D. Roger did not order anything from his crew members, but they took it upon themselves to inherit his will. As a result, throughout Monkey D. Luffy’s journey, he came across several members of the Roger pirates who guided him in the right direction. It all happened after they came to know that he ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi, which was the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika.

The Gorosei had mentioned that Zoan-type Devil Fruits have a mind of their own, so there is no way that Shanks did not know about it. Even if he was upset in the beginning, he chose to accept the fact that the Devil Fruit had chosen Monkey D. Luffy. It was always Shanks’ intention to make sure that Luffy had found the One Piece.

The Roger Pirates traveled the entire world before finding the One Piece and knew that they were 20 years earlier for Joyboy. It is a pretty interesting theory and makes a lot of sense. But until Eiichiro Oda approves it, nothing can be told for sure.
