Marvel Cinematic Universe is no longer a bulletproof franchise, and it’s visible through Brie Larson’s The Marvels which misfired with $47M in its opening weekend and turned into the worst debut in MCU history. However, fans on social media still seem to have hope left for the film.
Gathering on X, netizens addressed The Marvels’ -77.9% drop on its 2nd weekend domestically. However, fans unanimously praised the movie for its quality and recalled The Shawshank Redemption effect, wherein the 1994 movie flopped right after its release, but eventually turned into a cult classic.
Brie Larson’s The Marvels Witnessed a Major Box Office Drop
MCU has been facing a massive downfall in box office collection for a long time. After the failure of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, followed by the box office catastrophe Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel Studios witnessed the ultimatum with Brie Larson‘s The Marvels.
The recently released movie misfired with $47M in its opening weekend and turned out to be the worst debut in MCU history. Initially deemed to make closer to $75M to $80M, the projections shrank dramatically in recent weeks to $60M to $65M. With bad buzz and a lack of marketing strategy, the movie even failed to match its own disappointing estimates.
According to The Hollywood Handle, Brie Larson’s recently released movie had a -77.9% drop on its second weekend, domestically. In comparison to Morbius which had a -73.8% drop and The Flash which had a -72.5% drop, The Marvels appears to have overpowered them negatively.
Fans Use The Shawshank Redemption Effect To Justify The Situation
Despite the gradual decrease in box office collection and numbers, fans are unwilling to give in. Still having enough hope left for the film, fans on X unanimously cheered for The Marvels. Blaming it on the lack of proper marketing and promotion, netizens praised the movie for its storyline and quality.
Further, using the example of silent hits like The Shawshank Redemption, fans claimed that Brie Larson’s The Marvels still have hope to turn into a fan-favorite film. Discussing how the 1994 movie failed to perform well at the box office upon its release, fans recalled that it still turned into a cult classic later on. Similarly, Twitterattis believe that Larson’s movie will do the same.
So?
That’s just a measure of the number of tickets sold, not the quality of the experience. And sometimes poor box office performance is simply the result of a poor marketing campaign or things having nothing to do with the film itself.
“Shawshank” tanked in theaters too.

What is the deal with this movie? I really enjoyed it. The end credit scene made me scream. There's nothing wrong with this movie. It was good. It gave MCU vibes and had JUST enough comedy to make it funny, unlike other thunder-god-like previous movies that overkilled.

And the movie was phenomenal. I don’t understand the hate. It seems to only be coming from straight white men.

Considering fans’ theories, there still seems to be some hope left for The Marvels. Rest is based on luck and sudden turn of events.
