Shazam 2 Director David F. Sandberg Subtly Trolls Rotten Tomatoes: "Just got my lowest critic score and my highest audience score"

The much-awaited sequel of Shazam! hit the theatres just a few days back and it seems like the film’s director has something to say about the rotten critic score that Shazam! Fury of the Gods received on Rotten Tomatoes.

Directed by David F. Sandberg and produced by DCU co-CEO Peter Safran, Shazam! Fury of the Gods stars Zachary Levi (Shazam!) and Grace Caroline Currey (Mary Bromfield) along with Rachel Zegler (Anthea/Ann) and Jack Dylan (Grazer). While the superhero sequel had a rather dismal opening weekend at the box office paired with its pitifully low critic ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, it did manage to bag glowing audience reviews. And Sandberg has shared quite a juicy tweet about the same.

Shazam 2 Faces the Wrath of Sub-Par Ratings And Box Office Blunders

Shazam! Fury of the Gods opened in cinemas on a lovely Friday evening on March 17, only to welcome consistently underwhelming numbers over the weekend while simultaneously snaring sub-par ratings at best.

With a displeasing debut over the weekend, the David F. Sandberg-helmed sequel grossed a meager sum of about $65 million, its domestic earnings amounting to a disappointing $30.5 million from more than four thousand theatres, as per a report by Variety. Not to mention, the movie doesn’t seem to have done exceptionally well in the global circuit either, adding only $35 million more to its dismal box office performance.

Meanwhile, Shazam 2′s Rotten Tomatoes score only seems to be adding more fuel to the fire. The sequel got toppled with a shoddy rating of merely 52% with critics rebuking the film for being “less satisfying than its predecessor.” However, the critic score seems to stand out sharply against the movie’s audience ratings which happen to be way more generous than the former, standing at a high 88%.

After Shazam! Fury of the Gods fell prey to alarmingly low critic ratings, Sandberg took to Twitter to give his two cents on the situation, claiming how he hadn’t expected to get his “lowest critic score and highest audience score on the same film.”

The 42-year-old Swedish filmmaker also remarked how he had been hoping to see a different result than 2019’s Shazam! regarding the upsetting critic scores. “I think it’s a good film. Oh well,” Sandberg stated, seemingly slighted that the sequel didn’t do as well as he’d expected it to.

While the first film had a much better opening weekend at the box office, the same can’t be said for its successor. However, there’s still time for Shazam 2 to pick up its pace and salvage what it can over the course of the movie’s run.
